Governor Jay Nixon Targeted In 'Fortnight For Freedom' Campaign

A Creve Coeur area church is among many urging the faithful to lobby concerns over a senate bill sitting on the Governor's desk.

Father Gerard from has asked church members to join him in the Fortnight for Freedom movement, which asks Catholics to pray, fast and exercise their citizenship in order to convince Governor Jay Nixon to sign SB 749, a bill that “makes sure that no one is forced to pay for abortions or contraceptives in their health insurance plans,” according to  this week’s bulletin.

“Please contact the Governor today and tell him abortion is not health care and you don’t want to pay for it in your health plan,” the priest wrote in his From the Pastor’s Desk column.

The bill was authored by Creve Coeur area State Senator John Lamping.

In arguing for a veto of the measure, The St. Louis Post-Dispatch Editorial Board said the proposal is "a symbol of our broken political system — a system in which, rather than working together to find compromise, opposing ideologues are intent on destroying their opponents."

Governor Nixon has until July 14 to make a decision.
