Is ALDI Back In The Picture In Creve Coeur?
On-again, off-again interest in the former Borders site appears to have been rekindled.

Creve Coeur City Planner Whitney Kelly confirmed to Patch Friday that representatives for the discount grocer ALDI has submitted building plans and applied for a sign permit at the former Borders bookstore property on Olive Boulevard.
Borders closed last September.
Patch left messages Friday morning with representatives for ALDI and the commercial developer of the property.
A letter posted on the former Borders front door from the city dated October 3, 2012 allowing for interior demolition and other work at the site indicates an October 24 deadline for a building permit to be issued.
As a permitted use on the site, ALDI would not need Planning and Zoning or City Council approval to move forward on the property unless the building's exterior changes.
While several former Borders locations in St. Louis have been redeveloped since the chain went out of business last fall, the Creve Coeur property has been challenging, according to City Community Development Director Paul Langdon, because of access issues off of Olive at New Ballas Road.

Aldi would be a horrible idea! How does that make Creve Couer better? It totally cheapens the area.

You're right. We need more restaurants! All restaurants, all the time. How does the sale of cheaper goods cheapen an area? Does Chesterfield Valley have that problem now that their Aldi's (a very clean store) is open?

As a long time Creve Coeur resident, and a faithful Aldi shopper, I LOVE the idea of an Aldi I don't have to drive far for. The new stores are clean and pleasant. Especially as I don't feel I am getting ripped off.

Ive never been to an Aldi's. Great spot for Barnes & Noble, Old Navy. With Dierbergs & Trader Joes, it's grocery overload.

There's a Barned & Noble just down at West County Mall. Those stores struggle as it is, they are not going to cannibalize their own clientele by opening another store 6 miles away. Plus, there is a locally owned bookstore just a few blocks away.

Theres already an Old Navy at Ross and Olive!! Its a great spot for an Aldis. The Aldis in Chesterfield is always packed. Who do you think ows Trader Joes.

Actually, Aldi's split a number of years ago into two companies - the one that operates TJ's has no Aldi's in the US. I'd like to know more about the Old Navy at Ross and Olive. Must have missed it. Far as I know, the closest one is at Ladue Crossing.

Old Navy has not been at Ross and Olive for several years. It has been replaced by a PetSmart.

I agree- it would cheapen the area, uh, I mean grocery prices! It will be in walking distance for "downtown" folks. Just saying- there are two sides to the coin. I've heard from people on both sides.

For the Aldi nay-sayers, let's just get the argument over with: Put in a Saks Fifth Avenue or a Tiffany's and let's move one. BTW, Aldi's is one of the best-run companies in the world. So is White Castle. Guess we'll never get one of those either if it cheapens the area - never mind both companies have a great track record of growth and are never seen closing locations unless they become too small or run down over time.

I think Aldi's is a great idea, not only would it help those having a hard time with this economy but it will provide some jobs. Believe me there is nothing that fancy about Creve Couer that Aldi's would cheapen. Don't get me wrong it is a nice place and I am happy to live in the area. I think Aldi's would do a great business and probably packed all the time. Iam sure those of you that say you will not patronize will. Stop being a snob.

No it wasn't. I live less than a mile from that Borders, probably was up there every 2 weeks. Never witnessed a 'problem'. Why do people find that when people actually use the roads we've built it's a 'problem'?

I personally don't like the idea of an Aldi. I agree, it's grocery overload with two Dierberg's on Olive. I think an Old Navy, Target, OR a Dunkin Donuts would be a great addition to that area.

Aldi's is a great idea. It certainly would be closer to shop and the stores are well run and clean. The canned goods, produce, dairy items, snacks, etc. are just as good as the name brands (some even better) and they are cheaper. Would love to have Aldi's as a neighbor. If you haven't shopped at Aldi's, try it. You might just find that you like it.

The only thing i am concerned about is parking. I have been to an Aldi's and yes they are always crowded. I see the lack of parking spaces an issue. On the other hand Creve Couer does need a Target, I'm tired of having to drive to the Rock Road, which is the closest.

What kind of parking problem do you think a target would create? There is definitely not enough space for target! Grocery overload? I think Aldi's will bring increased revenue to Creve Coeur, some of you need to take your ego out of this and look for the positive it can bring to Creve Coeur!
