Share Memories of Sendak's 'Where the Wild Things Are'

Sendak has died at age 83. Tell us your memories of reading his books—especially "Where the Wild Things Are."

My two children are well above the age when they'd sit still for their mother and father reading a book to them. It won't be that many years before they have their own children. They'll be doing the reading. And I have no doubt that Maurice Sendak's "Where the Wild Things Are" will be among the books they crack open and recite. On Tuesday, we learned that the author of perhaps one of the most famous children's books of all time had died at the age of 83. The New York Times' report said the author had died from complications after a recent stroke. Writers have lauded Sendak's worth, but in particular his ability to craft children's stories out of what might have been considered "untraditional" — monsters "roaring their terrible roars" and "…

Loved to use this story in my KG classroom over the years; the children loved the idea of monsters who were manageable and fun:-) We also loved "Chicken Soup With Rice" and "Pierre." I remember I had the books AND the recordings to go with--we'd sing and sing!   more ›

SingFest: The Halls Were Alive With the Sounds of Music

Third annual Ladue District Choral Festival a splendid performance all the way around.

One thing that can bond the Ladue School District together is a love of singing. For the third consecutive year, the halls were alive with music as hundreds of choral participants strutted their stuff at the annual Ladue School District Choral Festival. An overflow crowd filled the new performance center at Ladue Horton Watkins High School on Tuesday night. Ladue’s Choral Director Thomas Lowery couldn’t be happier, watching the seats fill up prior to the start of the performance. “This is a great showcase for our vocal students. They love to perform on the stage here at Ladue High,” he said. Directing the event was Dr. Jeffrey Carter, native Missourian and chairman of the music department at Webster University. 'Idol' Journey Ends and Another Begins For Chaminade Grad

Patch talks one-on-one with Chris Bandi.

Chris Bandi can now tell the world what he's known for weeks and months. The 2008 Chaminade College Prep graduate earned a "golden ticket" during American Idol auditions in June, but was eliminated on the second day of what's known as "Hollywood Week" on the popular singing reality show. Read: Is Chaminade Grad Ready For Idol Worship? Because of the sheer number of contestants on the show, viewers in St. Louis and around the country would have to have been watching extremely close to know that the Chesterfield native-turned University of Mississippi Senior made it that far. Bandi was not featured in this week's programs but he was able to confirm on his Facebook page that his time on the show came to an end in episodes which were shot in …

Is Chaminade Grad Ready For 'Idol' Worship?

Chris Bandi made it out of the St. Louis audition and into Hollywood Week on the popular FOX network program.

St. Louis already has a track record when it comes to producing success on FOX's American Idol. Nikko Smith, son of the legendary St. Louis Cardinals shortsop and Carrie Underwood, who caught the eye of judges here, are proof of that. Now, a Chaminade College Prep graduate is about to see if he has what it takes as the latest season of the talent search contest enters "Hollywood Week" Wednesday and Thursday. Chris Bandi, a 2008 Chaminade graduate, didn't end up in the episode dedicated to the St. Louis audition. But his version of Walking in Memphis was enough to earn a "golden ticket" to Hollywood. In this video posted by Idol producers, Bandi talks about how he first got into singing as a 4 year-old dressed up as Elvis for Halloween. In …

Changing Of The Guard: Sculpture Art Comes Down In Creve Coeur

The pieces could be replaced by others from the Laumeier Sculpture Park.

After almost a year on display at the Creve Coeur Government Center, a pair of Felipe Linares paper mache sculptures in the lobby on loan from the Laumeier Sculpture Park were taken down Tuesday. Read: Sculptures On Loan And On Display In Creve Coeur See: City of Creve Coeur Arts Commission The display has been part of a larger effort to encourage art in the community. The city recently formed an Arts Commission, which will also explore the idea of a second loan arrangement for different works from Laumeier in addition to other responsibilities, including advising city leaders on how art could be commissioned and funded, as well as how art factors into development.

And, Action! Parkway North & Ladue Grads Behind New Film

'Welcome To Shirley' made its world debut Tuesday night.

Some young filmmakers with ties to the Creve Coeur area probably did what anyone in show business would love to do Tuesday night: celebrate a sold out crowd at a world premiere. Welcome To Shirley, which, according to the film's website, "addresses and satirizes the quirkiness of the family unit, as well as the small-town environment, but on a deeper level it confronts complex ideas of bereavement, familial rivalry, and how hard it can be to stay together as things are falling apart," hit the big screen for the first time Tuesday at the Tivoli Theatre in University City. The film is the work of Joe Weil and Blake Lawrence (Ladue Horton Watkins High School graduates), and Paul Brick (Parkway North graduate), among others, and was shot and …
