An Elementary Perspective: Toast

My daughter Julia came to live with me two years ago for school. It isn't easy for me to raise someone who is practically my nine-year-old clone, but that is exactly what I find I am doing with Julia. Through our judo and soccer practices, reading, writing and arithmetic, Girl Scouts, and Japanese language classes, we occasionally have a conversation that connects us both in a sometimes deep and usually humorous way. Hopefully, you will be as entertained as we are.

Toast

Daddy is encouraging Julia to be comfortable with some basic food preparation.  Julia has decided to make toast for breakfast but clings to Daddy in a scared manner after pulling the toast lever down.

Daddy:  What are you doing?

Julia:  I’m scared.

Daddy:  You’re scared of what?

Julia:  The inside of the toaster is getting redder!

Daddy:  (disgusted)  What do you think; the flames shall jump out of the toaster and…

(The toast pops out of the toaster.)

Julia:  Scream!
