BBB Warns Residents of Door-to-Door Scam

Young people are falsely posing as students of L’École Culinaire in an effort to get victims to buy phony magazine subscriptions, according to the Better Business Bureau.

The Better Business Bureau released the following alert earlier this week St. Louis area residents should be alert for a new door-to-door magazine sales scam involving young people posing as students of L’École Culinaire, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) warns. A homeowner in the 5400 block of Pernod Avenue, in Kirkwood's North Hampton neighborhood, said she was approached by a young man and a woman last week who asked her to buy magazine subscriptions to be sent to servicemen and women overseas. They told her that they were enrolled at the well-known culinary school in St. Louis County and were raising money to further their studies in Italy. The homeowner said she became suspicious when she asked the young woman for the name of the …

Do You Think Farmers' Markets Are 'Fresher'?

Local farmers’ market vendors say that the fruits and veggies they grow are superior to grocery store produce for many reasons.

Do you buy the freshest produce possible? According to many area farmers, the fruits and vegetables you buy at the grocery store may not be as fresh as you think. With farmers' markets open now (or about to open) around the St. Louis area, including Wentzville, Lake Saint Louis, Webster Groves, Kirkwood, Clayton, Ellisville, Wildwood, Arnold and elsewhere, we wanted to talk a little about what "fresh" means to you. Tim Hess, owner of Silent Oaks farm and a vendor at several area farmers’ markets, told Patch that most of the produce sold in local grocery stores comes from Calfornia or Florida, areas where many farms are staffed by migrant workers. “It’s a long trail and at the end of the trail you’ll find that migrant Mexican workers do …

The two greatest deterrents to lo locally grown produce and fruits are... 1. Convenience - everyone wants to have their needs met close to home, easily accessible and inexpensive 2. Instant Gratification - "I want it NOW, even though it is not in season I want it and should be able to have it!" Gone are the days of waiting for the peaches and tomatoes to ripen in the backyard! I personally would …   more ›

AMC Theatre Dine-In Concept Could Be Ready Before January

Ordinance received first round reading at Monday night's Creve Coeur City Council meeting.

A corporate representative for AMC Theatres told Creve Coeur City Council members Monday that, if approved, a project to bring the company's in-theatre dining concepts to the West Olive 16 location could be in place in time for the Christmas holiday movie season. George Patterson, a Senior Vice President for AMC addressed the council Monday. The project has already been endorsed by city staff and the Planning and Zoning Commission. Patterson assured council members about the steps the company has taken in bringing the meal concept, which includes alcohol, to other locations around the country, including "carding" all patrons. The dine-in scenarios would mean a makeover for each seating area. Fewer, more comfortable chairs, a digital film …

KC Star: Molina Healthcare Medicaid Suit Dismissed

The company had previously announced plans to close operations in Creve Coeur, laying off more than 100 workers.

A health care firm which last month announced plans to close its offices in Creve Coeur has reportedly taken another hit. The Kansas City Star reports that Molina Healthcare Friday saw its lawsuit challenging the awarding of the state of Missouri's Medicaid contract, dismissed. According to reporter Jason Hancock, a St. Louis County Judge wrote "Molina was denied a contract not because of any discrepancies in the bidding process, but rather because the company scored lower on evaluations than the three winning bids." Molina had already filed notice with the state of Missouri that it intended to close June 1, laying off 119 workers. A skeleton staff would wind down operations until August 1.

Easing Congestion: Bellerive Plaza Owners Seek City OK For Project

Request will go before the city's P&Z panel later this month.

Sometime in the not too distant future, a trip to Silky's or Jimmy Johns in Creve Coeur's Bellerive Plaza might be a little easier. The DESCO Group, owner of the property located west of Interstate 270, is asking the city to let it adjust its development plan for the site in order to add a left turn lane heading onto Olive Boulevard westbound. City Planner Whitney Kelly told Patch the proposal means getting rid of the existing median, which means adding greenspace elsewhere on the property. Kelly said under the arrangement, which would also include MoDOT, DESCO would cover the cost of new light signals at the intersection to account for the new turn signal. A representative from The DESCO Group declined immediate comment Thursday by phone…

Two items: (1) There might actually be a side benefit to eliminating the median: I've always been curious when running on the sidewalk along Olive adjacent to Bellerive Plaza, how the handicap ramps allow access from the sidewalks along each side of the entry but wheelchair users are abrubtly faced with a median with vertical curbs that they somehow must cross. It has no effect on runners/walkers…   more ›

Blues Ownership Back in Local Hands for First Time Since 1999

Beer disributor Tom Stillman leads local ownership group.

Almost four months after a St. Louis Blues executive told a Creve Coeur-Olivette Chamber of Commerce audience that the long-discussed sale of the team was "reaching the finish line," the transaction is now a done deal. When local businessman Tom Stillman took to the microphone at the Scottrade Center Thursday, it marked the first time the St. Louis Blues were in local hands since Kiel Center Partners--(under the watchful eyes of Mark Sauer and Jerry Ritter) ran the show in 1991-1999. The St. Louis Blues have battled the tides of changing economies and different places in the standings since the days when insurance magnate Sidney Salomon brought professional hockey to St. Louis for the 1966-67 season. An array of different owners with …

How Will Harrah's Sale Affect Pattonville?

Pattonville CFO Ron Orr says its unclear how the casino's sale will affect Pattonville's bottom line.

The Pattonville School District could see an increase in revenue due to the sale of Harrah’s Casino. Ron Orr, Pattonville’s chief financial officer, said the $610 million sales tag is more than either the St. Louis County Assessor or the St. Louis County Board of Equalization valued the facility. Penn National bought the property for $108 million more than the county assessor estimated Harrah's was worth, and $395 million more than the County Board of Equalization estimated. The Board of Equalization valued Harrah’s at $215 million in September, while County Assessor Jake Zimmerman’s assessment was $502 million. But it’s still hard to predict what will happen, Orr said. Pattonville’s revenue is based on the combined property tax rates of …
