Holiday Light Recycling Drive

The city is once again participating in St. Louis Green’s
Holiday Light Recycling Drive. From now until January
12, bring unwanted strings of holiday lights to the drop
box in the lobby of the Police Department, 300 N. New
Ballas Road. Please do not include other types of holiday
decorations and, if possible, do not bag the lights before
placing in the collection bin. All types of holiday lights are
accepted, regardless of age, working condition or light type
(i.e. LED or incandescent).

Nearly every component of holiday lights are able to be
recycled. In 2012, the drive resulted in 117,000 pounds of
holiday lights being diverted from landfills and recycled
or repurposed—plastic stripped from the wires is reused,
often as a playground surface; copper is removed and sold,
with a portion of proceeds benefiting local food banks;
glass is recycled. The 2013 Holiday Light Drive goal is to
divert 136,000 pounds of lighting.
