Series of films with aging themes will also feature discussions afterward.

The following information is courtesy of a press release from the city of Creve Coeur:

Maturity and Its Muse, along with the Creve Coeur Arts Commission, will conduct a series of film viewings and discussions on Mondays in September. The series will focus on films that explore positive aging themes, though the series is open to all ages. Each viewing will conclude with a discussion
(optional) among attendees, filmmakers, academics, and artists.

Screenings will be held at AMC Creve Coeur 12, 10465 Olive Blvd., from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. (doors open at 12:30 p.m.).  The schedule will be as follows:

September 9: Harold and Maude

This 1971 film is ranked 45 on the American Film Institute’s list of 100 Funniest Movies of all Time, and was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress in 1997. Ruth Gordon was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for her role as Maude. Immediately following the show, Harper Barnes, author, former movie critic and critic-at-large for the St. Louis Post Dispatch, and Chris Clark, artistic director, St. Louis Film Festival, will host a lively discussion regarding the film.

September 16: The Trip to Bountiful

Actress Geraldine Page’s performance as a senior trying to escape from her son’s apartment to the town of her childhood home earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress in this 1985 film. This triumphant tale of an elderly woman’s journey home (now a Broadway 2013 Tony Award Winner) will be followed by a discussion with Dr. Tom Meuser, Ph. D. Dr. Meuser is an Associate Professor at the University of Missouri – St. Louis (UMSL) and director of the Gerontology program in the School of Social Work. He also coordinates the UMSL Life Review Project through which local seniors tell their life stories on camera to graduate students.

September 23: Strangers In Good Company

Strangers In Good Company is the adlibbed story of seven women stranded at a deserted farmhouse, miles from civilization. The film is about being old and thinking young. Madge Treeger, a retired psychotherapist and co-author of “Letting Go: A Parents’ Guide to Understanding the College Years,” will be the speaker following this film.

September 30: Bella Bella and Close Harmony

Bella Bella chronicles the vibrant life of Bay Area sculptor, widow, and Holocaust survivor Bella Feldman. Close Harmony, a 1982 Academy Award winner for Best Documentary (short subjects), tells the story of a senior citizen chorus and elementary school chorus practicing together for a combined concert. The closing program of the series will feature a performance by The Dunnettes, residents of Dunn Road Manor, a senior living community. The Dunnettes express their faith and have fun singing hymns and
classic gospel tunes.

Thanks to the generosity of AMC Creve Coeur 12 and The Gatesworth Senior Living and Parc Provence, the Silver Screen Series is offered free of charge to the public (residency in Creve Coeur is not required). These events would not be possible without the help of our community partners: OASIS, The Harvey A. Friedman Center for Aging at Washington University, Cinema St. Louis, and VOYCE: We Empower and Educate.
