Akermin's Successful Field Demonstration with Proprietary Biocatalyst Delivery System

Akermin, who moved to BRDG Park in March of 2012, has successfully tested its proprietary Biocatalyst Delivery System at the National Carbon Capture Center in Wilsonville, Alabama. The pilot unit has operated continuously for several weeks capturing close to 90% CO2 from flue gas with significant rate enhancement and no degradation in performance.

The Biocatalyst Delivery System enables enzymes to work efficiently and for an extended period of time addressing the key issue of enzyme stability in harsh industrial environments. This environmentally-friendly approach to CO2 removal significantly reduces capital and operating costs.

“The project represents our first near commercial-scale demonstration of our technology; it continues to exceed our expectations in operation for our first scale beyond the laboratory,” said Barry Blackwell, Akermin President and CEO.  “The pilot unit will greatly assist us in understanding commercial issues and in bringing in additional investors and partners.”

This solution will be demonstrated in future projects and can be applied to further reduce the cost of CO2 management for large-scale industrial operations and natural gas and coal-fired power plants.

“We have a clear road map forward for commercialization of our technology and it is dependent on establishing the right industrial partnerships,” said Blackwell. “We are actively having discussions both locally and globally to create mutually-beneficial partnerships which will drive us to expand our operations at BRDG Park and bring industrial partners and investors to the St. Louis venture community.”

The project, which was partially-funded through a grant from the US Department of Energy, creates valuable near-term and long-term opportunities with initial commercial sales expected in 2014, once partnerships are established.

Current project partners and suppliers include, NovozymesEPIC SystemsBattelle, Emerson and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.
