Creve Coeur Pitcher Drafted By NY Mets

Righthanded pitcher Dan Herrmann, of Creve Coeur, was selected by the New York Mets in the 20th Round of Major League Baseball's draft Saturday.

Update: 8:27 p.m. Monday
Dan Herrmann Tweeted Monday that he will travel to Port St. Lucie, FL, the spring training home of the New York Mets and will sign with the organization. Herrmann could not be reached by phone Monday night. The decision means he will not be attending Bradley University on a baseball scholarship.

Herrmann could be assigned to one of the Mets' short-season Class A teams located in Florida, Georgia, Tennessee or New York.

Original Story:
Dan Herrmann just wrapped up a high school season that saw his CBC Cadets reach the state finals. Now the righthander has to decide if his next pitch will be as a Bradley Brave or as the property of the New York Mets organization.

Herrmann, a Creve Coeur resident, was taken by the National League team in the 20th round of the Major League Baseball draft Saturday.

"I thought yesterday was going to be the big day, honestly" Herrmann told Patch by phone afterward. If the timing was a little off, the end result didn't seem like much of a surprise. Herrmann has met with a variety of Mets scouts over the last year and had an in-home visit with scouts in recent weeks. When the 15th round came along, he said his advisor called and told him to expect something in the next five rounds.

Herrmann now has a little more than a month to decide what to do next, as he faces a July 12 deadline to sign with the Mets or continue on to Bradley. If he goes to college, he wouldn't be eligible again for the draft until after his junior year.

If yesterday was something of a disappointment, Saturday offered an improvement.

"Today was a really good day."
