The bookseller announced a liquidation of assets last summer and closed in September.

An ALDI spokesperson was not immediately available for comment Monday morning. According to city planners, a grocery store is a permitted use for the site as it is presently zoned. City approval would be required for signage and changes to the building's exterior.

According to a recent news release announcing the opening of a store in Alabama, "ALDI opened 75 stores in the United States in 2011 and plans to open 90 stores in 2012. ALDI has approximately 1,200 U.S. stores located in 31 states."

There are currently 20 ALDI locations in the St. Louis area according to the company's website.
