West County Part of Growing Resale Store Trend in Retail

Post-Dispatch notes rise of retailers such as Savers and thrift shops such as Red Racks in west county communities.

With retailers such as Savers and Red Racks opening shops in West County, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch has taken note of the trend, reporting that other retailers are watching carefully, doing more advertising and considering expansions.

The Post-Dispatch report mentioned the opening of Savers in Ellisville with plans to open another one in the former Barnes & Noble in Crestwood.

Creve Coeur, Ballwin, Eureka and Chesterfield either now have new resale retailers or are about to see new ones opens. Red Racks just opened in Ballwin and has plans to open a store in Creve Coeur.

The Post-Dispatch quoted the senior vice president of retail stores from MERS/Goodwill on the issue of taking notice of the new stores moving in.

"We’re not going to go willy-nilly and open 40 more stores now to stop everyone else from moving in," Mark Kahrs told the newspaper. "But maybe there’s a little more motivation to make our expansion plan come to fruition quicker."

A consignment shop just opened in Eureka called The Shop on the Hill, in the building that used to be a fitness facility called Curves for Women. The former Suburban Leisure Center in Chesterfield is about to be converted into a consignment shop, but an opening date has not been announced.

The newspaper also reported that the Association of Resale Professionals says the resale segment is one of the fastest-growing segments of retail—expanding 7 percent a year in the last two years.
