  • textbooks, reference books
  • school supplies
  • new clothes
  • school/college information

1.  Make a list of tasks that you need to accomplish to be prepared for the "back to school days." Do you need to register, tour the school, meet with school officials, shop for school supplies, buy new clothes or uniforms, purchase textbooks at the bookstore, get an annual physical, take entrance exams, register for classes, pick up supply lists, or make school transportation arrangements? Whether your child is going back to school or you are heading back to college, you'll need a plan of action to prepare for "back to school" requirements.

2.  Check with your school to see what you need to do to meet their policy guidelines. Do you need to have your children vaccinated? Does the school require uniforms? Do you need to pass an entrance exam for your university? Does your college require you to purchase a parking permit? Will you need to interview with faculty or administration? What fees will you need to take care of in advance (meal expenses, lab fees, etc.)? Do you know the school deadlines for registration, etc.? The more you know about your school's policies and guidelines, the better prepared you and/or your children can be to go back to school.

3.  Write down all of the "back to school" supply items you'll need to purchase before school starts. Find out what books, paper, folders, calculators, pencils, pens, crayons, diapers, rulers, tissue paper, glue, scissors, dictionaries, backpacks, notebooks, and other common school supplies you'll need for yourself or your children. Each school, teacher, and class may have different school supply lists. Find out where the best "back to school" deals are offered in your community. Being adequately prepared will save you time and money.

4.  Shop for "back to school" clothes after you've listed all of the clothing items you will need to buy. Will you need to buy uniforms, shirts, pants, gym clothes, sneakers, jackets, sweaters, hoodies, dresses, skirts, underwear, and socks? Make sure you know your school's dress code policies in advance.

5.  Keep your lists and receipts as the beginning of school draws near. Cross through or check off items purchased as tasks are completed. Sign up for school mailing lists to stay informed of new school requirements for you or your children. Add new items and tasks as needed to stay organized and stress-free, as you successfully prepare to go back to school.

6.   Every College makes a reasonable effort to provide for the safety of students and their personal property but students must practice good safety habits and exercise individual responsibility. The ultimate responsibility for personal safety rests with each student. Each person should be aware of his/her surroundings and potential risks to personal safety: walk with friends and in lighted areas, know building evacuation procedures, drive defensively, lock vehicles, and know how to contact Safety Officers, resident directors and other campus authorities.
