“As the cold temperatures get their grip in the St. Louis region, many people spend most if not all of their day indoors. As a result, they become more sedentary, tend to gain weight, and may be affected by Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD),” explains Carolynn Ingerson-Hoffman, RN and founder of MediNurse.

MediNurse recommends these simple daily practices that can make a significant difference for long-term health and wellbeing:

  • When you get up, get dressed even if you have no plans to leave your home.  The act of getting dressed is a psychological and physical boost because you have actively prepared to start your day.

  • Open shades or curtains when the sun is shining in that particular direction.  The light and warmth will feel good and help to maintain your mood.

  • If possible, bundle up with proper clothing and walk outside to get the mail, newspaper, or just to the street curb.  This physical activity gets your blood and your bones moving.

  • When inside, make a point of walking around your home.  Take a few laps around the perimeter and consider it your daily workout.

  • It’s not too late to get your flu shot.  Even if you have no plans to be among crowds, you will likely be exposed to family and neighbors with potential germs. The latest news from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports is that flu is widespread among 41 states and continues to present a serious medical risk.
