Conversations: Bringing Plant Science Discoveries to the Marketplace

For over a decade, new technologies like RNA silencing have been used to discover and investigate plant traits to improve crops. RNA silencing is a powerful tool within the plant scientist’s toolkit to understand how plants resist pests and diseases, produce valuable products and survive in diverse and changing environments. The technology is already being applied in crop plants to provide resistance against viruses and improved oil composition.  Researchers are now advancing RNA silencing technology to deliver new products that improve yield, and accelerate the ability of farmers to respond to changing growing conditions.

Please join Dr. Jim Carrington, President of the Danforth Plant Science Center and Dr. Tom Adams, Vice President of Chemistry Technology at Monsanto as they discuss the impact that this science will have on the future of agriculture and the commercial marketplace.

PhenoDays: Imaging & Robotics

The last decade has seen an explosion of digital profiling techniques on the molecular scale. The next decade will see a similar explosion in digital profiling of phenotypic outputs driven by advances in imaging and robotics. Recent advances have allowed phenotypes to be measured quantitatively and in high throughput, enabling model based analysis and the derivation of real biological knowledge. The Danforth Center’s 15th Annual Fall Symposium will highlight cutting-edge science that has led to real biological understanding in a wide range of organisms. Below is a summary a few of our distinguished presenters. Be sure to check in throughout this month for Symposium updates and learn more about our other presenters.

Fueling the Future: Sustainable BioFuels Using Missouri’s River Floodplains

Researchers have long known the fertile lands of Missouri and the Midwest have the capacity to be powerhouses for biofuel production. What remains elusive is a way to grow the biomass needed to make biofuel without encroaching on land dedicated to food crops, and a way to profitably transport and refine the biomass. Big energy challenges require big ideas and even bigger collaborations. Learn more about this fascinating topic.
