Are You Dehydrated?

Every year, there are 50 to 100 sudden deaths among middle school, high school and college athletes. Getting a sports physical, and other regular physician checkups, is important before beginning any new sport or activity, especially among young people and older adults.

Avoiding dehydration – when your body loses more fluid than you take in, and doesn't have enough fluids to carry out its normal functions – is another important step in avoiding activity- related injury and illness, says Dr. Rachael Mergenmeier, physician with in Creve Coeur.

Signs of mild to moderate dehydration include dry, sticky mouth, sleepiness, thirst, decreased urine, dry skin, headache, constipation and dizziness. Mild to moderate dehydration can be treated by drinking more fluids – water or sports drinks.

Severe dehydration is a medical emergency, and symptoms include:
Extreme thirst
Very dry mouth and skin
Little or no urination (urine may be dark yellow or amber)
Sunken eyes
Low blood pressure
Rapid heartbeat
Rapid breathing
Fever
Disorientation or unconsciousness

Children and older adults should be treated with additional caution, especially if they are sick or have been more active than usual. Often times, the first warning sign of dehydration in elderly adults is slight confusion or disorientation. So whether you're an athlete gearing up for fall/
winter sports, or a weekend warrior working on DIY projects around your home, take steps to avoid dehydration. Drink plenty of fluids before, during and after physical activity or exercise, avoiding energy drinks.

And if you experience signs and symptoms of severe dehydration, seek medical attention immediately.
