Creve Coeur Sees First Blast Of Winter

Light accumulation, but blustery winds make conditions difficult.

Winter weather made its first appearance of the season late Saturday and early Sunday, with the National Weather Service calling for a 30 percent chance for more snow Sunday afternoon, along with frigid temperatures and wind chills as low as -18 degrees predicted for Monday.

Snowfall began in the area late Saturday, and Creve Coeur Public Works crews were first called in for their first shift of road salting and clearing around 11 pm, with reinforcements brought in around 3 am. By daylight Sunday, there was at least an inch of accumulation with the potential for up to three inches, according to forecast models. At one point, a Missouri Department of Transportation spokesperson said there were 450 employees and as many as 200 plows clearing the greater St. Louis County area.

City-plowed streets and sidestreets were generally in good shape at mid-day Sunday. The city's public works facilities were busy Sunday, as crews were getting equipment back out on the street, complete with fresh loads of salt. City leaders say they are ready with 2500 cubic yards of salt, which they say should be enough to get through the winter season.
