Creve Coeur Couple To Run In London Marathon Despite Boston Tragedy

Teri Griege and her husband David leave Wednesday for the United Kingdom.

Organizers of the London Marathon said Tuesday that the race planned there for Sunday would go on, despite the act of terror in Boston at the finish line of that city's marathon, which left at least three people dead while injuring scores of others.

Creve Coeur residents Teri and Dave Griege will be among the thousands running in London. This is Dave's first, but it will round out the "Grand Slam" of five majors for Teri, who has run in the Chicago and Boston Marathons, as well as marathons in New York City, Berlin and the Ironman World Championship.

The last three came after a diagnosis of stage 4 colon cancer, for which she continues to receive treatment.

"There's a little bit of fear," Teri said Tuesday about running in London after what transpired in Boston, although she said London would probably be the safest now, comparing it to the safety of flying shortly after the 9/11 attacks, when security protocols were at their highest.

She said they've received emails from London officials telling them that the race will go on as scheduled, and that secruity will be reviewed. USA Today reported that organizers would be in touch with runners on a daily basis.

The Grieges plan to arrive Thursday, attend a marathon expo on Friday and "unless something comes up that tells us not to," will run Sunday, Teri said.

Race organizers announced there would be a moment of silence observed for 30 seconds prior to the start of the race, which begins in three different places. The Grieges will not start in the same location, but hope to meet up at the third mile marker.

They're planning on bringing their cameras with them to document the history of the route, which will take them by Buckingham Palace, Tower Bridge and Big Ben.

All marathon participants are being encouraged to hold their hands over their hearts as they cross the finish line in London as a show of solidarity to those touched by the Boston tragedy.
