Homecoming Dresses

There was a time when choices in homecoming dresses were pretty limited. You could wear cookie-cutter ball gowns with more petticoats than style, or they could wear something a little more casual—like a tea-length gown.

Thankfully, times have changed. These days, instead of wearing yards of taffeta, there are options—and there’s something to fit every body shape and style.

This year, make a statement with short and sassy dresses. If you’re not into showing off your legs, try a a floor-length mermaid-style gown or a form-fitting dress that hits just below your knees.

Other hot trends this year include dresses that feature ruffles, sequins or a bubble hem. Strapless styles are always in, but this year, the one-shoulder style adds a fresh element to the game.

Try a flirty cocktail dress in bright, bold colors such as hot pink, soft yellow, royal purple or coral. Or, consider a sophisticated floor-length dress in varying shades of white, gray and black, which are also hot this year. Or, try something a little different and choose an animal print with a pop of color. Bold colors such as cherry red and royal blue are also chic this season.

About Jewelry

It’s all about balance. If you’re wearing a dress that screams glitz and glamour, try accessorizing with understated jewelry, such as a chunky jewel-toned bracelet or a single-strand necklace. If you’re going for a sleek, simple dress, add touches of sparkle such as glass-beaded necklaces and rhinestones in your hair.

Regardless of which style you choose, go big with your earrings this season. Nearly any style will look fabulous paired with large hoop earrings (jeweled or not) or dangling chandelier-style earrings with colorful crystals set in sterling silver, for example.

Hot Homecoming Hairstyles

The Perfect Ponytail: This year’s ponytail styles are easily modified, always fun—and if you’re trying to save a few bucks, it’s a style you can accomplish without a trip to the salon. You can wear your pony high on top of your head or down low, or you could sweep it to the side. Try teasing it up, curling it or blowing it straight, depending on your dress.

Braid It Up: Take a cue from the red carpet this season and opt for a braided style. Consider adding a small braid to your style for a little kick, have extensions braided into your hair or braid your bangs back. Hit your favorite salon and get a braided updo or a messy fishtail braid. Or, if you want a more sophisticated look, try a braided chignon.

Sweep It to the Side: Asymmetrical styles are a hot trend this season, so they’re definitely on the short list of homecoming styles. Try adding a braid, a twist or curls for a fun and flirty look, or go sleek and add a flower or another fun accessory to complete the look.

Sleek, Simple, Straight: If you’re wearing an especially detailed dress or you just prefer a more simple look, consider wearing your hair simply straight for homecoming. Part it down the middle or on one side, and add a little shine with good serum. This is another style that you can accomplish on the cheap and still look divine.

A Pop of Color: Just about any hairstyle can take on a whole new look with a pop of color. Whether you add color to your own hair or you add colored hair extensions or feathers, you can add a new dimension to your homecoming look. You can coordinate your hair accessories with your outfit or even your school colors.

For the Guys

You can’t go wrong with a classic black-and-white tux—even celebrities tend to stick with them. It’s a classy, crisp and clean look. But don’t be afraid to add a little color to your look, and if you don’t match your date perfectly, it’s not such a big deal this year. Try accessorizing with your date’s outfit rather than wearing the exact colors she’s wearing.

For something a little different, try a black shirt under your jacket with a colored tie.

If you’re looking for something a little less formal, try a dress shirt and tie with a nice pair of slacks. You can still coordinate your look with your date’s dress.
