Creve Coeur Celebrates Green Power Community Challenge

Creve Coeur will celebrate on Tuesday evening becoming only the second Green Power Community throughout Missouri. The celebration will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on June 25 at Tappmeyer House in Millenium Park, 2 Barnes West Drive.

Creve Coeur has become the second Green Power Community in Missouri and will celebrate the accomplishment from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Historic Tappmeyer House in Millenium Park.

Kathleen Engel, a partnership manager for Ameren Missouri Pure Power, said that the EPA will present the city with an award during the event for becoming the second Green Power Community in Missouri. Clayton was the first community.

Clayton reached the milestone in significantly reducing the amount of energy produced by a community, and status as a Green Power Community, in December 2011.

Creve Coeur started preparing for its challenge in January 2012, Engel said, and launched it in April 2012. The city reached its goal a few weeks ago.

Creve Coeur accomplished the challenge by reaching its goal, set just over a year ago, to reach a threshhold of 3 percent reduced energy, Engel said.

The city reached the threshhold by using solar energy and with renewable energy certificates, Engel said. The certificates increase a monthly power bill and allow the extra funds to go toward supporting wind power and other renewable energy sources.
