ST. LOUIS – After one day of competition, the Ameritime High School boys basketball classic, hosted by Parkway West and Missouri Baptist University, is gearing-up for an exciting second day of competition.
Wednesday will feature another full slate of games, beginning at 4:00 p.m. when Parkway South plays Parkway Central in the first game of the consolation bracket. At 5:30, the No. 3-seeded DeSoto will play the No. 7-seed Lafayette in the second consolation semifinal game.
On the other side of the bracket, top-ranked Hazelwood Central will play the No. 5-seed Borgia at 7:00 p.m. The winner of that game will play the winner of the final game of the night between the No. 2-seed DeSmet and No. 6 Parkway West at 8:30 p.m. for the championship on Friday.
Two upsets occurred on Monday in the opening day of the annual tournament. Parkway West defeated DeSoto 62-47. In the game, West’s Cash McCurdy led all scorers with 23 points in the game.
The other upset came in the final game of the night when Borgia knocked-off Parkway Central 56-52. Senior Jordan Miller led the way for Borgia with 18 points and went 4-4 at the free throw line. Central junior Nathan Biggs also had 18 points.
DeSmet had the biggest scare of the evening, but beat a very tough Lafayette Lancers team 60-58. Senior standout and Butler recruit Nolan Berry had 27 in the game for the Spartans. That total led all players in the tournament. Lafayette countered with the hot perimeter shooting of junior Nate Messer. The 6-3 guard compiled four, three-pointers in the game and finished with 18 on the night.
Hazelwood Central bested Parkway South in the final game on Monday with a 17-point performance by senior Jordan Martin. The 6-8 senior is said to be committed to Southern Illinois University Carbondale in the Fall of 2013.
Games on Wednesday are scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. Doors open at 3:00 at the Carl and Deloris Petty Sports and Recreation Complex on the campus of Missouri Baptist University. Tickets are five dollars and include all games of the day.
