Mercy’s Day of the Child Celebrates Kids

On May 1, Mercy's Day of the Child, we celebrate and honor children, children's health and those in our ministry who have the privilege to care for Mercy's youngest patients.

Mercy has been dedicated to little ones inspiring us to do big things since 1827 when Mercy Founder Catherine McAuley began serving children and women in Ireland. That care was brought to St. Louis in 1871 when the Sisters of Mercy opened a 25-bed infirmary for women and children.

On May 1, Mercy’s Day of the Child, we celebrate and honor children, children’s health and those in our ministry who have the privilege to care for Mercy’s youngest patients.

Celebrating this special day, patients and visitors at Mercy Children's Hospital were treated to a few special events to make everyone feel like a kid again.

The Missouri Ballet Theatre company performed an excerpt from a Midsummer Night’s Dream in the lobby and between performances, the dancers visited kids who couldn't leave their hospital rooms.

Across Mercy, children who visit Mercy clinics or hospitals today received a gift commemorating this special day in honor of them.

Representing Mercy Children’s Hospital and Day of the Child, 3-year-old Drew Albritton and his parents threw out the ceremonial first pitch at the St. Louis Cardinals game. In addition, the first 25,000 Cardinals fans received a Mercy Day of the Child Rally Towel.
