Midwest Phillies Pastime SLU/SIUE - Midwest Invitational Tournament

The Midwest Phillies first summer tournament was cut short by the rain, but outstanding pitching shined through the clouds.

The weekend of May 31 the Midwest Phillies baseball team played in the Pastime SLU/SIUE - Midwest Invitational tournament.  But with the rainy weather in the St. Louis area, the tournament just ended up with each team getting a couple of games.

In their first game, the 17U Midwest Phillies faced the Recruits Baseball Club 18U Black team and lost 0-3.  The Phillies were challenged by Recruits pitcher Kyle Uhrich.  Tyler Musgrove got a single, Levi Greenberg got a single and a double, and Garrett Taylor got a single and a double, but the Phillies couldn’t put the hitting together to get any runs.  Adam Bieber and Joey Hope pitched for the Phillies.  They also challenged the opposing team, but the Recruits were able to string their six hits together to get on the scoreboard.  The Midwest Phillies dealt with some of the Recruits base runners by picking them off.  Pitcher Adam Bieber had one pickoff, and catcher Garrett Taylor picked off another.

In their second game, the Midwest Phillies faced the St. Louis Aces and won 2-1.  Joey Hope scored two runs, with Levi Greenberg getting the two RBI.  Ben Campbell had two hits and Levi Greenberg had a hit and a sacrifice fly.  Catcher Garrett Taylor and third baseman Ben Campbell caught a runner stealing third base.  The Phillies pitching was smokin’ hot in this game.  Starter Thomas Higgins had six strikeouts in four innings.  Reliever Connor Ladig struck out his first five batters in a row and had a total of seven strikeouts in three innings.  Catcher Garrett Taylor was calling pitches.
