Update: Memorial Service Set For Jim Goessling

The De Smet graduate was a member of the 1973 boys basketball team that won a state championship. He died Sunday after a battle with rectal colon cancer.

Wednesday 12:45 a.m. Update:

According to information posted on Legacy.com via The St. Louis Post Dispatch, a memorial service for Jim Goessling will be held Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m. at De Smet Jesuit, following visitation which starts at 10 a.m., also at the school.

Original Story:

Word surfaced Monday morning that Jim Goessling, a member of the 1973 state title basketball team at De Smet who went on to a career as a dealmaker in the world of sports and radio in St. Louis, died Sunday. De Smet Athletic Director John Stewart confirmed the news Monday. Goessling, who lived in Creve Coeur, had been fighting rectal colon cancer over the last few years.

Patch interviewed Goessling in 2011 when he was presented with the American Cancer Society's Stephanie Phillips Survivor Award prior to the Coaches vs. Cancer High School basketball tournament.

"Life in general is completely different," he said at the time. "You appreciate everything. You appreciate everybody in your life, any employee, who your friends are, how much you really care for everybody," he said.

"I have a chance to enjoy everybody one more time. I'm going to get 5 years, I hope maybe 10 years, who knows."

Funeral arrangements had not been released as of late Monday night.

Sad news indeed for all connected to DeSmet. Jimmy wasn't just a star player on the '73 state championship team but he was also a Sigma Pi brother. A great guy who will be missed

This breaks my heart. God bless the wonderful Goessling family, champions of everything in local sports. I will remember the "River Goose" for ever.

What a guy. From the moment I met Jim Goessling, in the mid eighties, I knew he was special. We went on to become good friends and one of the only guys who referred to me as "Chuckie". Bubba...you will be missed.

Mr. St.Louis, I met Jim and his friends Barry Burke, and Mike Smallwood at Culpeppers in the Central West End in the Mid 90's. Later Jim introduced me to Charlie Spoonhour...I had many laughs with thoughs guys as well as Drinks. Jimmy loved St.Louis and that is why people migrated to him. If you never met Jimmy...he had a real Entourage. Tell Spoon at Culpeppers in Heaven we will join both of you soon.

Spoon, the Goose and Smallwood in Culpeppers CWE, More laughs in a night from those 3 than you'd get in a whole year paid at a comedy club.

More about the Ladue site than yours. Just seems like stories are staying up longer. Maybe its justRead More the summer doldrums.

I didn't notice sign-in issues for more than a day, but I don't sign in every time either. As forRead More "more stuff, less news," I agree with Fly - putting the blogs under the headlines in the same column can make it appear that blogs are news too. Unless it's mine, of course! ;) Guess the announcements take up more space, but don't ever seem to change. And if Patch is all about local, shouldn't there be fewer national ads - esp. the garbage ones like "5 Veggies that kill Belly Fat?" Ugh. Just my two cents...
Stephanie R. June 12, 2013 at 11:59 am
Robin, no one local is buying ads to replace the national GoogleAds. No story about Monday's cityRead More council meeting. Guess it's hard for one editor to cover 2-3 cities.

Thomas, AMEN to this issue I raised earlier this year with the Chamber. Image is everything. And theRead More Olivette City Council saw this too and pulled the plug. Creve Coeur, not so much, LOL. Not sure what business you own but if I know and get the chance, I'll support you because your're a right-thinking kind of businessman who knows how to define LOCAL.

I think it's AMAZING the Creve Coeur/Olivette Chamber can't hold its golf tournament at the CREVERead More COEUR Golf Club, insider the Dielmann Rec. Complex, named after the Chamber's MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR. I'm amazed. Also not surprised.

Thanks for asking! I'm working on a follow up story on that. Do you live in Orchard Lakes? What doRead More you think?
Chris June 6, 2013 at 09:39 am
I live in the subdivision and I can not wait for these offers to come in and to find out what isRead More going to happen. I for one plan on taking it if it is good. The subdivision is in rough shape, the sewers are falling apart and too many of the owners have moved away and just rent the homes to people who are not taking care of them or they are switching out tenants every year. If this one fails another will come and sooner or later one will get it. The hold outs are getting older and the younger families are going to jump at a chance to get out of their homes with doing absolutely no repairs.

It IS kinda pea-soup green. I like it - supposed to evoke "grassroots" news, I think!
