Word surfaced Monday morning that Jim Goessling, a member of the 1973 state title basketball team at De Smet who went on to a career as a dealmaker in the world of sports and radio in St. Louis, died Sunday. De Smet Athletic Director John Stewart confirmed the news Monday. Goessling, who lived in Creve Coeur, had been fighting rectal colon cancer over the last few years.

Patch interviewed Goessling in 2011 when he was presented with the American Cancer Society's Stephanie Phillips Survivor Award prior to the Coaches vs. Cancer High School basketball tournament.

"I have a chance to enjoy everybody one more time. I'm going to get 5 years, I hope maybe 10 years, who knows."

Funeral arrangements had not been released as of late Monday night.
