Man Charged With Drunk Driving in Creve Coeur

Michael P. Bates told police he drank beer and took OxyContin before driving, according to court documents.

A North County man faces a felony charge for drunk driving in Creve Coeur.

Michael P. Bates, 53, of the 1100 block of Maple Avenue in Spanish Lake, was charged Feb. 7 with driving while intoxicated as a persistent offender. Bates has two previous alcohol-related driving convictions.

Creve Coeur Police said Bates was pulled over on Feb. 7 on westbound Olive Boulevard near Fee Fee Road after an officer spotted him speeding and weaving. The officer noticed signs Bates was intoxicated, and he admitted drinking beer and taking OxyContin two hours before being stopped, according to a police report.

Police said Bates refused a breathalyzer test, and a search warrant was issued to take a blood sample.

Bates previously was convicted of DWI in 1992 and was convicted of driving with excessive blood-alcohol content in 1990.

Bates posted 10 percent of a $15,000 bond and was released from jail Tuesday.
