Police said Robert E. Eifert, 74, of Crystal City, MO was crossing in front of the hospital's Surgery Center entrance when he was struck by a car February 7. A Mercy statement indicated the driver was coming out of a parking garage.

Police said Eifert was not a hospital employee and that the driver was interviewed at the scene and later released. The case remains under investigation by the department's traffic safety unit.

A Mercy representative said the hospital "is cooperating fully as the Creve Coeur police investigate the accident."

"Mercy expresses deepest sympathy for the  man and his family. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time," according to a hospital statement Friday.

According to the obituary posted on Legacy.com, Eifert was married for 55 years, was an Air Force veteran and spent 35 years working for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
