Creve Coeur Red Light Cameras In Mixed Appeals Court Verdict

The city's system that tickets red light runners has survived legal challenges before.

Missouri's Eastern District Court of Appeals has ruled in favor of the city of Creve Coeur's use of red light cameras, in the latest legal challenge to the devices used by municipalities around the St. Louis region. Creve Coeur's system had been taken to court before and upheld.

But the court did rule that critics' most-often cited claim, that the cameras are more about generating revenue than public safety, should be remanded back to the trial court for further discovery.

Creve Coeur City Attorney Carl Lumley called the suit's claims "thin" and "childish" and said he was "confident" the city can demonstrate the cameras are about safety. He noted that that the program doesn't make money for the city when weighed against the costs of a police department and municipal court.

Attorneys have 15 days to file post-opinion motions at the Appeals Court level.

Cases involving red light cameras in Florissant and the city of St. Louis could also be decided by the state supreme court.
