Mitt Romney To Todd Akin: Get Out Of the U.S. Senate Race

The GOP's nominee vowed to stay in the race, despite pressure up and down the Republican ticket.

Update 3:19 p.m.

The Associated Press reports presumptive Republican Party Presidential nominee Mitt Romney has called on Todd Akin to exit the race to be Missouri's next U.S. Senator.

Original Story

U.S. Rep. Todd Akin, under pressure from Republican party leaders to quit Missouri's U.S. Senate race over the  again announced his intent Tuesday to remain as the GOP nominee.

Akin, speaking on Mike Huckabee's national radio program for the second time in two days, told the former Arkansas governor he's staying in the race and said he felt betrayed by fellow Republicans who called for his exit.

“I misspoke one word in one sentence one time,” he said, adding that he did nothing morally or ethically wrong. “Nobody expects us to get every word perfectly,” he said.

Akin said he believes he can win the race, despite a Tuesday push by current and former U.S. Senators John Danforth, John Ashcroft, Kit Bond and Jim Talent, as well as current U.S. Senator Roy Blunt, saying he should step down.

Soon after the interview ended, an email plea from the Akin campaign went out seeking donors.

"Liberals and pundits want to write me off and hand this Senate seat back to Claire. I need your help to respond," it said, asking for donations of $3.

Candidates have until 5 p.m. Tuesday to quit the race without the involvement of the court system.

Mike: A "Budget Control Act" is NOT a Budget. Read it http://nation.time.com/2012/08/24/a-smarter-way-to-trim-the-pentagon-budget/ The control act merely fixes what is already budgeted. Now, You go out and look up the 2005-2006 US BUDGET approved by congress (it is required by Constitution) Last done in 2007 (I believe?) The Budget control act has nothing to do with creating the BUDGET. You simply will never accept that your own Party is Intentionally hiding the truth from you. They know that the Budget of running this country cannot be revealed NOW. So "ignorance" of that will allow you to "spew" untruths. Continue to condemn other budgets trying to fix actual crisis happening right before your eyes. The Blind leading the blind? No this is the Ignorant leading the ignorant. Finally, You do not know who you are writing to on this site. May I suggest you stop revealing your "ignorance" of everything this country gave to you. May I suggest every President "inherits" the times problems, they are paid to handle it. Barack Hussein Obama is the First President in History to BLAME and Mock and Sue his own people, his own states. Everybody on this site is sincere in their beliefs, and you have NO knowledge of our background. I tried to inform you, but you refuse to be corrected. I come from an era where we finally say -- "sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me."

Paul - please link to your "non-partisan" warning so I can dismantle it for you. The right has been warning us about the economic apocalypse that Obama, Berncake and Geitner's policies were going to bring on America since well the day Obama took office. Instead the stock market has reclaimed all of the losses that occured because of Bushes failed economic policies. The inflation that we've been warned about has not occured. And how they were going to destroy the value of the dollar. Yep wrong again. The one thing I know for sure is to not take economic warning from the right. Kind like taking addiction advise from a crack dealer. Regarding spending. Obama has got us out one needless war and a timeline to exit Afghanistan. With this next four years we're gonna the rest of this mess that W left us with fixed. Just be patient!

Debra Rodgers, what you speak concerning rape is non-sense in rapes some disassociate, some are drugged both of which puts individuals in a relaxed state. Are you ones then claiming such rapes aren't legitimate rapes? Of course, regarding abortion exceptions according to some who are part of the pro-!ife movement these type rapes would not qualify as legitimate rapes qualifying for any possible abortion exceptions since she was not also beaten to almost death. The pure dishonedty in all this foolishness concerning pregnancy ocurring out of rape is the fact the even women who have been violently beaten during rape have become impregnated. It is just plain ignorant for anyone to attempt to make such an argument as you are attempting. It is nothing short of others attempting to play God in the lives of others.

PaulRevere, Yes, gasoline prices are higher, due to the economic sanctions in Iranian oil sales on a global oil market. This would be no different under any President. Due that we were in a Depression when Obama took office not to mention. Wall Street almost bringing this country to its knees, we are still attempting to recover from it. Federal depvt is worst and the rate of poverty, ALL any intelligent person would expect with what this country have gone through. WHAT YOU ON THE RIGHT FAIL TO ACKNOWLEDGE---- The unemployment rate, stock market ARE IMPROVING! Corporate profits, mortgage rates and the level of consumer debt ARE BETTER TODAY! See: PolitiFact.com. "A Scorecard on the Economy Under Barack Obama"

Bush was blocked by Pelosi and Reid? Sort of like how Obama has been blocked by McConnell and Boehner? SSDD
Rahib August 24, 2012 at 09:20 PM
Yes, why are gas prices so high. Drilling is back up to year 2006 levels, yet prices are not $2.00 per gallon. Republicans have promised that if we drill more, prices will fall; another Republican lie.
Rahib August 24, 2012 at 09:29 PM
Bush did not veto a single spending bill until his second term.
Rahib August 24, 2012 at 09:31 PM
Healthcare in America is fine the way it is. Conservative are in favor of people using the emergency room then not paying for their bill. Their plan is to do nothing. If you don't have healthcare, too bad.

PaulRevere: I saw this today and you might be interested in it. Home • The FactCheck Wire • Medicare’s ‘Piggy Bank’ Medicare’s ‘Piggy Bank’ Posted on August 24, 2012 Bookmark and Share Republicans claim the president’s $716 billion “cuts” to Medicare hurt the program’s finances. But the opposite is true. These cuts in the future growth of spending prolong the life of the Medicare trust fund, stretching the program’s finances out longer than they would last otherwise. Mitt Romney has claimed that President Barack Obama has “robbed” Medicare. Rep. Paul Ryan, Romney’s running mate, said Obama “turned Medicare into a piggy bank to fund Obamacare,” promising to “stop the raid on Medicare.” And the Republican National Committee is promoting on its website a feature it calls “Obama’s Countdown to Medicare’s Bankruptcy,” which lists the days, hours, minutes and seconds left until the Medicare Part A trust fund is exhausted. But there would be even fewer days until the fund’s exhaustion if Obama’s health care law hadn’t included those $700 billion in spending reductions. It’s true that experts, including Medicare’s chief actuary, doubt that some of those spending cuts will actually be implemented. But if they are, Medicare would spend less each year than it had been expected to otherwise, allowing Medicare to stretch further the income it receives from payroll taxes and premiums.
Rahib August 24, 2012 at 09:34 PM
Hey lay off Paul Ryan, he's a defect hawk. Examples of his defecit hawkness - voted for unfunded wars, Part D medicare, voted and railed against stimulus money, but took it. Classic politician: Do as I say, not as I do.

Sonny: There is not one example showing WHY the Republican claim is wrong. What!? "there would be even fewer days until the fund"s exhaution.....if Obama's health care law hadn't included $700Billion "IN SPENDING REDUCTIONS" The funds Exhaustion---The fund's exhaustion Can you read? Do you understand that . The Fund is set toward exhaustion. What a twisted statement this is, and you ignore the statement confirms and says"$700billion in spending reductions" That is exactly what President did. Note the last paragraph "Doubt that those spending cuts will actually be implemented" "Medicare would spend LESS each year" "allowing medicare to STRETCH further" Sonny, it has 12 years to stretch, then gone . unable to care for anyone on medicare today. Sonny, I only hope you are not on Medicare, because it is YOU that will suffer if Obama's health tax goes into effect in 2014. Your vote is all they want. Financial is my profession. You could take my advice or go out and seek and pay someone to explain how this memo you sent me conclusively says MEDICARE's DAYS are Numbered. One last time: Obama took $700Billion in budgeted spending for Medicare and transferred that budgeted spending to his Obama-health-tax where he knew he needed to definitely spend it. Now this article clearly states the $700B "medicare spending cuts" might not really happen (might? is the lie) deceived!. Duh! Now Obama will spend $700B on his ObamaHealthTaxAct PlusHe will spend $700B on Medicare.
PaulRevere August 24, 2012 at 11:19 PM
D Walker: Many believe more drilling would reduce prices. Many believe the pipeline from Canada would much improve unemployment. Point is, you give this President total excuse route by concluding "No different under any President". That is not true. Obama talks about "inherited"-- Well he also inherited the greatest military in the world. That is his job , to Protect the USA. It is not His job to create jobs. That is where You and I differ. Blaming any President on wall street and economic conditions is a cop out. I could make your house into a million dollar home using other peoples money. Obama has borrowed, spent trillions of our tax money to support the economy. He has run oput of easy money. His answer for everything is tax Those off unemployment are into much lower paying jobs, forclosures will spike again. Mortgage rates are artificially kept low by Treasuries printing more loans to support this economy. GM Got $60B and will be Gone in 5 years. (See forbes magazine -Lutz) Solyndra solar panels $500b bankrupt energy. In summary , this President did NOTHING but Spend and indebt our future to keep giving Free money and welfare unemployment extension for 2 years to MASK anemic situations. Where do I stop. Read reputable news--see that 2 days ago we are warned that this country could fall into major recession unless we reduce our DEBT NOW IMMEDIATELY. Now you find me 1 thing Obama did to reduce our debt.? Be warned Gas will be Over$5 elec bills $300Mo

Rahib: If I have to inform you that McConnell is a Minority party while Pelosi and Reid both controlled the majority Democratic party, then you probably do not understand how Obama was able to Pass every law in 2008 2009.
PaulRevere August 25, 2012 at 12:11 AM
MIKE: Stock market up- True Reclaimed all the losses-False There are millions of individuals who were wiped out and never will live to see any of their money --GM- stole from every bondholder now made poorer because of Mr O's $60B bailout . GM will be gone in 5 years (See the Forbes article in Aug) You forgot that the DOW average no longer includes the Bankrupted GM? It reached 14,000 during Bush years. Now 13,000 read the predictions It will crash again , if Obama does not stop his spending answers to every problem. Getting out of the War? He is taking that spending and will re-spend it on his welfare programs. Is that some genious move! He'll be asking for every home and asset we own on any next war. JunkCar,1stTimeHomebuyer,VoltRebates,Solyndrasolar_losses You see Mike, Obama has spent and borrowed $7bil to keep people above water. Better watch your wallet? Or maybe you are that 50% of the country who pays ZERO income taxes. Let me offer an economic 101 lesson: It is impossible to have economic recovery with LOW interest rates. Businesses must demand money to expand- That will lead to higher rates. It is impossible to offer society "Free" health anything if the TAX for it is passed on to business. Every business starting in 2013 2014 will be forced to raise prices. That Mr M: IS INFLATION. It's the $7bil borrowed that has deferred the inevitable. Both parties are Stuck!
Sonny Pondrom August 25, 2012 at 11:16 AM
Hi P.R. I am on Medicare. That why I am concerned when you are not saying what experts are saying. Like": In remarks on Aug. 15, Romney made it sound as if cutting future Medicare spending would not extend the hospital insurance fund’s solvency: “Under the current projections, Medicare will be insolvent in 12 years, and that’s not acceptable to me. That’s why we have worked very hard to come up with a solution. But, the idea that the President has put forward, cutting $716 billion out of Medicare? I think that’s a real mistake.” But cutting the future growth of Medicare spending is exactly how Medicare’s solvency is extended. And without those cuts in the health care law, the insolvency date moves closer. “If you’re taking 700 billion out of Medicare,” Walker says, “it means the trust fund bonds will last longer, because they’re already paying out more than they’re taking in.”
PaulRevere August 25, 2012 at 04:45 PM
OK Sonny: You just wrote the Clearest and concise comment I have read on this site. 1) "under current projections..inslovent in 12 years"--Correct 2) The Prsident's idea-"cutting"$716B is not only a"mistake"-it is stealing the money that should have gone into medicare to pay the "CERTAIN" growth expected. Let's say 2012 medicare program costs $100 (in 12 years (yr2024)it is expected to "Grow" to $200) So we taxpayers (You & I) and the congress has Already in their Budget to Fund Medicare for 12 more years by "sending" $200 for the program. Now Obama will Stop sending starting next year2013,(let's say$50 of the $200) and use that for Obama Health tax. Obama does that by changing the actuarial expected annual $200 medicare needs to $150. He does that by just changing the programs payments to providers or "medicare recipients" ALL CURRENT MEDICARE RECIPIENTS WILL LOSE THAT $50 and THE WHOLE PROGRAM WILL EXHAUST IN 8 YEARS. not 12 years. You cannot call a "spending cut" (future) unless you take that money and "do not spend it ANYWHERE ELSE" EVER. You now know that Obama is cutting the funds that should have gone to medicare and arbitrarily changed the future growth to $150 needed, when in fact the number should still be $200. If congress does not knock out the Obama Health tax, You only have 8 years left. Without stealing that budgeted $716b from medicare's future payout needs, Obama's NEW Health TAX bill could never exists. (see my next comment for you))
PaulRevere August 25, 2012 at 05:03 PM
Sonny: If congress adopts "medicare reform" ,(new Romney-Ryan proposal) they will change the program for anyone (UNDER AGE 55) You will be covered the REST OF YOUR LIFE EXACTLY THE WAY you are covered today. However they do it, at least it keeps the program for life for you whereas, Obama did not address your 8 years left. He really abandoned all current medicare recipients because he does not have any plan to FIX the program's outlays. OBAMA' Health TAX will literally throw AMERICA over the cliff, because their deceiving "FEE" is really a "TAX" on every business and individual in America. Taxes raise prices of everything you buy. Finally, while stopping wars stops "war costs", the Democrats already have that money spent on MORE social welfare programs to buy votes. That is called "CUTS" in Obama's budget , but he had it spent elsewhere for all his new wasted trial baloon buddy-buddy deals. That is exactly what he did with your medicare. Called it a cut , when in actuality, he is spending it elsewhere. I can go on and on. B/T/W Claire McCaskill has every intention to make sure Obama's medicare steal act stays as is. She is also in your WAY. The same twisted "savings" is used in our defense spending
Sonny Pondrom August 25, 2012 at 08:29 PM
PaulRevere - Using your numbers: Given a sample $50 increase in cost per year, the 2012 system will have zero budget in 2024 as shown below. If the Affordable Care Act cuts the spending by $50 over the next 12 years, then in 2026, the cost/year will go down to from $200 to $150. This sample ACA savings will extend the budget by 2 years until 2026. BTW, the providers (hospitals, insurance companies, etc) have already agreed to the $710 B cuts. Spending $50 Example ACA Spending year cost/yr Budget cost/yr Budget 2012 $100 $1,850 $100.00 $1,850.00 2013 $108 $1,742 $104 $1,746.00 2014 $117 $1,625 $108 $1,638.00 2015 $125 $1,500 $113 $1,525.00 2016 $133 $1,367 $117 $1,408.00 2017 $142 $1,225 $121 $1,287.00 2018 $150 $1,075 $125 $1,162.00 2019 $158 $917 $129 $1,033.00 2020 $167 $750 $133 $900.00 2021 $175 $575 $138 $762.00 2022 $183 $392 $142 $620.00 2023 $192 $200 $146 $474.00 2024 $200 $0 $150 $324.00 2025 $154 $170.00 2026 $158 $12.00

Gosh I love how the right gets thier information! "So it’s come to this: Forbes cover story on “How Obama Thinks” is a gross piece of innuendo—a fact-twisting, error-laden piece of paranoia. This is the worst kind of smear journalism—a singularly disgusting work. Forbes for some reason gives Dinesh D’Souza the cover and lots of space to froth about the notion popular in the right-wing fever swamps that Obama is an “other”; that he doesn’t think like “an American,” that his actions benefit foreigners rather than Amurricans. It’s too kind to call this innuendo. It’s far too overt for that." http://www.cjr.org/the_audit/forbes_shameful_obama_dinesh_dsouza.php?page=all If only we could had George W. Bush another four years! What would they have called something worse than the Great Depression?

Mike: You say "do you think the morning after pill is an "abortion" pill. If there is no science to support AKIN's comment, then would you please provide the science supporting "The morning after pill --is an abortion pill?" If it's neither, than why take the "mornig after pill". It certainly must do something? I think pot destroys the brain. Is there any science supporting that? I think birth control pills --destroy the natural functions of the woman body., leading to many more medical problems and costs in woman. I believe birth control pills contribute to the single most expensive Health care of woman. Now there is much science about that--But you would ignore that science of studies, because YOU DON'T WANT TO BELIEVE IT. So let's just say-if there were valid science in support of Akin remark, you would strive for any rebuttal you can. Facts are also science. Since the birth control pill advocates state how much in saves in "medical for unwanted babies" may I also say the Pill has added $Trillions in extra woman problems that result in taking Pills. ALL PILLS HAVE MAJOR CONSEQUENCES ON ONES BODIES. Look at all the commercials- and Disclaimers.

Paul - one thing I've learned is to try not to give a conservative a science lesson. For some reason they don't take. Instead of thinking you understand a subject do a little reasearch. Google is your friend. Your comments about birth control bills make absolutely no sense. I'm not completely sure what point you were trying to make but there's this from Planned Parenthood. Millions of women around the world have taken the pill since the FDA approved it in 1960. It has been the most scrupulously tested medication of our time. Countless women take the pill from adolescence through perimenopause. Many stopped taking the pill only when they wanted to become pregnant and started taking it again after giving birth. Women not only rely on it for contraception but for menstrual regularity and other benefits. These benefits include less menstrual flow and cramping less infection of the fallopian tubes (pelvic inflammatory disease), which often leads to infertility fewer ectopic pregnancies (those in a fallopian tube) fewer noncancerous breast growths fewer ovarian cysts reduced risk of cancer of the lining of the uterus and of the ovaries less iron-deficiency anemia that results from heavy menses less acne fewer premenstrual symptoms, as well as related headaches and depression protection against osteoporosis — loss of bone mass The fact is that over the long term, use of the pill has offered many health benefits to millions of women worldwide.

Right on -Mr Kellogg! don't take any "Flak(e)" from this Mike guy. Mike still does not understand that yr2006 minus yr2000 = 6 years. Mike still does not understand that we had a DOw average of 14,000 under Bush. Mike still does not understand that Obama Borrowed every penny he has wasted during past 4 years. Mike still does not understand how to blame Bush for the rise in Gasoline from $1.89 to now $4 (under Obama) Mike still does not understand that Bush had unemployment rates of 5%-6% until that drastic yr2006 (When Nancy Pelosi & Harry Reid took over) I wonder if Mike knows they were Democrats. I wonder if the -800,000 lost jobs in Jan2008 should be attributed to the inept Democratic congress for 2 prior years. I wonder if Gitmo is "closed"? I wonder why Bush Tax cuts "for the Rich" suddenly have many TAX CUTS for the Middle class that Obama wants to extend. So Mike will answer this with is usual "one liner" because he has no responses to "FACTS"

Sonny writes "Bush begged people to buy homes" The American Dream!! Now try this--Obama pushed buying "Cars" (klunkers-program) Not only buy-But Obama paid the buyers $4,000 to buy a car. (Our Tax Money). (Costing $billions) Try this-- Obama also urged Buying Homes- Except his deal was one that upped Bush. Remember the 1st time homebuyer Obama program? OBAMA SENT A $8,000 check to anyone who bought a home. (our Tax money) (Costing $billions) Simple question to any one who loves Obama. WHO IS WASTING OUR TAX MONEY? Ever see the movie "Dum and Dummer"? Who is the Dummer?
PaulRevere August 29, 2012 at 05:54 AM
Witzen says"cuts in payments to medical device companies" is not a "Cut in medicare"? "overcharge" is not a cut? No -it's should still stay in medicare to pay "legitimate medicaid". If medicaid was budgeted to spend $100 , and Obama suddenly found $25 overcharging, it is a cut in medicaid spending from $100 to $75. Sending the $25 so -called overcharge to Obamacare to spend as Obamacare DID IN FACT REDUCE Medicaid spending to $75. Making up future overcharges 5 to 10 years from 2012 is deceiving and IS stealing from the medicaid budget. Playing budget games makes a mockery of our country's debt crisis. If all budgeted War expenses become unnecessary if our troops come home , this Administration will spend that on new programs. Now is that a CUT IN Total SPENDING? Or is it just a Cut in WAR spending?
