Influential Missouri Republicans Say Mitt Romney Should Pick Marco Rubio As Running Mate

Patch's 'Red Arch' survey shows 'Other' ties or outpolls prime contenders like Ohio Senator Rob Portman or former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty.

If Missouri Republican activists had their way, Mitt Romney would select Florida U.S. Senator Marco Rubio or former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice as his running mate. That's according to findings in the latest Patch "Red Arch" survey.

More than 60 influential Republicans, primarily from the St. Louis area, were asked using an automated survey tool what they thought about the GOP vice presidential options.

When asked who they would like to see as Mitt Romney's running mate, 31 percent answered Rubio, the first term United States Senator from Florida who has been a Tea Party favorite. Condoleezza Rice, the former Secretary of State under President George W. Bush, was next with 23.8 percent.

U.S. Representative Paul Ryan and Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal each came in at 11.9 percent, while former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty tied "OTHER" at 9.5 percent.

Of those who selected "OTHER," participants then nominated Conservative commentator and former Presidential candidate Alan Keyes, U.S Senator Kelly Ayotte (NH), U.S. Representative Allan West (FL) and U.S. Representative Justin Amash (MI).

U.S. Senator Rob Portman, of Ohio, long speculated as someone on the proverbial short-list, came in with a single selection at 2.4 percent.

When participants were then asked whom they believed Romney will select, Senator Rubio's stock rose slightly, coming in first at 33.3 percent, while Governor Pawlenty came in second at 23.8 percent. Senator Portman was next at 16.7 percent, followed by Governor Jindal (14.3), Representative Ryan and Secretary Rice (4.8) and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who garnered a write-in vote at 2.4 percent

The Red Arch/Blue Arch Survey

Patch political surveys are not a scientific random sample of any larger population, but rather an effort to listen to a swath of influential local Republican and Democratic activists, party leaders and elected officials in Missouri. All of these individuals have agreed to participate in the surveys, although not all responded to this week's questions. Interviews for this poll were conducted between July 23 and July 27.

Patch will be conducting Red Arch and Blue Arch surveys throughout 2012 in hopes of determining the true sentiment of conservatives, liberals and moderates on the ground in Missouri.

If you are an activist, party leader or elected official and would like to take part in a bi-weekly survey that lasts just a few minutes, please email Gregg.Palermo@patch.com.
