Joyner-Kersee Jumps Into Politics, Endorses Clay

Olympic athlete endorsing Rep. William Lacy Clay in new radio ad.

The Aug. 7 primary is less than two weeks away and everyone has an opinion on who should win—including former Olympic athlete Jackie Joyner-Kersee.

Joyner-Kersee on Tuesday added her name to the list of people endorsing incumbent Rep. William Lacy Clay in his 1st Congressional District race against Rep. Russ Carnahan. 

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Joyner-Kersee is featured in a radio ad for Clay. The ad also featured Clay's father, former Rep. Bill Clay, who held the 1st District seat for 32 years.

Clay previously received endorsements from St. Louis City Mayor Francis Slay, St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley and Gov. Jay Nixon. He also has the backing of Creve Coeur Township Democrats, which includes portions of the new 1st district. The city of Creve Coeur is now in the new 2nd district.

According to Clay's web site, he also has the endorsement of the Young Democrats of Greater St. Louis, St. Louis Ethical Society of Police, St. Louis Retired Police Officers Association and the National Association of Black Law Enforcement Executives. 

Carnahan received the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's endorsement over the weekend.

He also has the backing of the Missouri Fraternal Order of Police, St. Louis City International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Local 73, St. Louis County IAFF Local 2665 and the National Education Association (NEA), Missouri Chapter.
