Political activists, and organizers on both ends of the political spectrum in Missouri are voicing agreement Thursday that fomer Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney "won" the first presidential debate with Barack Obama, held Wednesday in Denver.
Patch conducted a flash poll late Wednesday night as part of the Red Arch/Blue Arch series of surveys taking the pulse of political thought leaders heading up to the November election. Responses came from 11 Republicans and 14 Democrats.
Nine Republicans felt Romney won the debate, as did 6 Democrats.
"Wow. This was an absolute destruction. The key to a challenger is to look like he belongs w/ the most powerful man in the world, and Romney did that," responded one Repubilcan.
"Obama was very off, and seemed angry, should have done better," wrote another.
"You fight fire with fire. Romney was aggressive, Obama was passive.....big mistake by Obama," wrote one Democrat.
Democrats said President Obama's attempt to highlight the lack of specifics in a Romney agenda would stick out to both progressives and swing voters in the state, while GOP backers pointed to the debate's focus on the private sector vs. government areas that would resonate with conservatives and swing voters in Missouri.
Missouri is still widely viewed nationally as likely to end up in Romney's column next month.
Patch also asked if their candidate's debate performance makes it more likely he will win the 2012 presidential election.
Eight Democrats said they were neutral on the question, with 3 agreeing in some way and 3 disagreeing.
On the Republican side, 10 agreed in some way. One respondent did not offer an opinion.
"I have hope again for the first time in a long time that Romney might win," one Republican wrote.

The Red Arch/Blue Arch Survey
Patch political surveys are not a scientific random sample of any larger population, but rather an effort to listen to a swath of influential local Republican and Democratic activists, party leaders and elected officials in Missouri. All of these individuals have agreed to participate in the surveys, although not all responded to this week's questions. Interviews for this poll were conducted the week of Sept. 4.
Patch will be conducting Red Arch and Blue Arch surveys throughout 2012 in hopes of determining the true sentiment of conservatives, liberals and moderates on the ground in Missouri.
If you are an activist, party leader or elected official and would like to take part in a bi-weekly survey that lasts just a few minutes, please email Gregg.Palermo@patch.com.
