Why The Low Voter Turnout for Tuesday's Election?

Despite issues and races with intense interest in Creve Coeur, countywide turnout was low. Tell us why you did or didn't vote.

According to the St. Louis County Board of Elections, voter turnout for the April 3 election was 13.8 percent, with a total of 90,233 ballots cast.

Turnout in Creve Coeur was expected to be heavier, considering the attention given the race for Mayor and the Ladue School District Tax Levy.

Anectdotally speaking, poll volunteers for various campaigns and elections officials told Patch they were somewhat surprised by the turnout.

Mike Newmark voted Tuesday afternoon atin Creve Coeur and felt a sense of responsibility. He also didn't want to lie to his wife when he got home

"I guess I learned my 'American Civ' well enough in my early years that no matter what it is, there's just this tug, it's voting day and no matter what's at stake, the number of people who vote say something to our whole society and we should keep saying it," he said.

He added that he didn't vote on everything on the ballot, because he didn't feel informed enough to make a decision

When residents in the Ladue School District get their tax bill this December, they will wish they hadn't stayed home.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/marketshare/2011/12/06/st-louis-doesnt-suck/2/ Take a look at the second reason that "St. Louis doesn't suck" in this article in Forbes - the excellence of the Ladue school district is specifically mentioned as a reason "the younger workforce that leading edge employers crave" might choose to move to the St. Louis area. Looking at people like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, etc., one could conclude that the best way to make money is to invest in the future, as the taxpayers of the Ladue school district have just chosen to do!

Election results have changed. A few more votes, not enough to change the outcome, but the school's margin of victory declined a little. I received no mailings, no calls (that's okay!), no doorknockers, nothing re elections in either the county or the school district in which I reside. Neither, as a Creve Coeur business owner, did I receive any indication from any candidates - except one - that there were or are any issues regarding business. Apparently business people live in a vacuum.

I don't get the reason for this story. The headline asks the question why voter turnout was low. But there's no answer given in the story. So why wasn't the story held until someone qualified and credible had answers?
