One of the things that I enjoy is the opportunity to experience and learn about other cultures and traditions different than my own. The upcoming Jewish holiday of Purim is based on the events that happened to the Jewish community in Persia a long time ago and one of the lessons of that story is that lack of understanding and misunderstanding or fear of others could have dire consequences for the community as I whole. Luckily, for the Jews in Persia, their lives were spared. Ultimately, the more we know about our neighbors and interact with our community, the better prospects we have for peaceful coexistence, harmony, and a true sense of community.
I hope that there are those out there who also share this value. With this in mind, I wanted to share with the entire St. Louis region,Jewish and those of all faiths, about an upcoming opportunity which is open to all faiths. On Saturday evening, February 16 the St. Louis Jewish Community opens the 4th annual St. Louis Festival of Jewish Life which will continue through Thursday, February
21. This week will feature concerts, movies, classes, art workshops, mahj parties, and more. One of the highlights is the first ever Jewish Rock Radio Rockfest National Music Festival featuring six visiting Jewish music artists from around the country on Sunday, February 17 at the JCC. Another highlight is a special concert on Wednesday, February 20 by a professional Jewish folk singing group, Shir Ami, to benefit the Jewish Fund for Human Needs (JFHN). JFHN award small grants to social service agencies not formally associated with the Jewish community to help those in need throughout the St. Louis region.
