Five Candidates Running For Two Slots On Ladue School Board

One incumbent and four newcomers are vying for 2 spots on the board of education in April's election.

The field is now set for the April 2 Ladue School District Board of Education election.

  • William Shirley
  • Jeff Kopolow
  • Kisha Lee
  • Dan Regelean
  • Sam Goodman

The four will run for 2 open seats. The top two vote-getters will take a seat on the board. Kopolow, a former Ladue Middle School and Horton Watkins High School teacher is an incumbent. Shirley, a lawyer and engineer, is looking to improve communication between the board and the public.

Lee was a supporter of the district's tax increase campaign last year according to Prop 1 documents. Regelean, a Savvis HR executive according to his LinkedIn profile, ran unsuccessfully for the board in 2010.

Goodman has run unsuccessfully for the Creve Coeur Fire Protection District board in past years.

Greg, if you can't find something decent to say about everybody in an article on running, don't say anything. This shows poor journalism.
Jill Moore January 18, 2013 at 12:17 am
I disagree. Good journalism is relaying the facts in an impartial and unbiased way. I think Greg did a good job. Not his job to say nice things.
Sam Goodman January 18, 2013 at 01:52 am
I did not say nice things. Find out about a candidates views and write about them. An election is all about what a candidate believes in, not what an editor has to to assume or through in his side remarks about Linkedin or prop1 remarks. The editor in this case has put a bias slant to his story.

Mr. Goodman, I'm sorry you feel that way but we'll have to agree to disagree on this. Looking forward to talking with all the candidates about their goals and aspirations for the Ladue School District.

Mr. Goodman,
Where did you stand on Prop 1? What are your beliefs? Why did you decide to run? Thanks.
Scott Simon January 19, 2013 at 06:58 pm
Sam, there's a solution for your campaign. Create your own media. Blog, website, social media, etc. The Internet is open for do-it-yourself promotion and journalism. It's about creating image and culture.

Thanks Scott for your input. I want the best for all our students, but fiscal responsibility is hard to get in the heads of the taxpayer and board. We have a great district, but with 80% going for salaries and benefits is a big problem. The present board thinks that by capping non-certified and leaving certified non-capped is a solution. Also, putting a activity fee tax on the district parents at a price of 20,000$ or a bit more is great. This is just pennies in multi-million dollar problems. Take big steps now for the future. The school district recieved their tax increase by a 53-47% margin, I believe another tax increase in four years won't and should not happen. Don't kick the can, take a bold approach now.

Sam, I agree with your stance. I attend almost every board meeting and I would love to discuss this further with you via email or in person. I will say that there are some exciting things happening and I believe we have a very strong CFO who is constantly looking for big and small ways to save money and be overall more fiscally responsible and fair to the children and the taxpayers. So there is hope. Of course, the CFO can only create and present ideas, he needs a board and administration who will do the right things. I believe you would be an asset to the board. Email me if you want to jillnelvis@aol.com

So what do the candidates have to say about spending $190,000 on someone who doesn't have to show up for work? http://fox2now.com/2013/02/04/you-paid-for-it-former-school-superintendents-sweet-deal/
William Shirley February 16, 2013 at 10:01 pm
I think that the any money spent "in the best interest of the district" should have been spent on energy-efficient windows (assuming a good Return On Investment), other necessary improvements, or other expenditures which are in the interests of the students and the taxpayers - not the former Superintendent.

A school is all about teachers and students ... what exactly should the money in the budget go towards if not teachers and the support staff who keep the schools running?

More about the Ladue site than yours. Just seems like stories are staying up longer. Maybe its justRead More the summer doldrums.

I didn't notice sign-in issues for more than a day, but I don't sign in every time either. As forRead More "more stuff, less news," I agree with Fly - putting the blogs under the headlines in the same column can make it appear that blogs are news too. Unless it's mine, of course! ;) Guess the announcements take up more space, but don't ever seem to change. And if Patch is all about local, shouldn't there be fewer national ads - esp. the garbage ones like "5 Veggies that kill Belly Fat?" Ugh. Just my two cents...
Stephanie R. June 12, 2013 at 11:59 am
Robin, no one local is buying ads to replace the national GoogleAds. No story about Monday's cityRead More council meeting. Guess it's hard for one editor to cover 2-3 cities.
Scott Simon June 12, 2013 at 04:05 pm
Thomas, AMEN to this issue I raised earlier this year with the Chamber. Image is everything. And theRead More Olivette City Council saw this too and pulled the plug. Creve Coeur, not so much, LOL. Not sure what business you own but if I know and get the chance, I'll support you because your're a right-thinking kind of businessman who knows how to define LOCAL.

I think it's AMAZING the Creve Coeur/Olivette Chamber can't hold its golf tournament at the CREVERead More COEUR Golf Club, insider the Dielmann Rec. Complex, named after the Chamber's MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR. I'm amazed. Also not surprised.

Whaddaya expect, if it's not broken, fix it! Just like Creve Coeur Government!
Gregg Palermo (Editor) May 30, 2013 at 08:13 am
Thanks for asking! I'm working on a follow up story on that. Do you live in Orchard Lakes? What doRead More you think?
Chris June 6, 2013 at 09:39 am
I live in the subdivision and I can not wait for these offers to come in and to find out what isRead More going to happen. I for one plan on taking it if it is good. The subdivision is in rough shape, the sewers are falling apart and too many of the owners have moved away and just rent the homes to people who are not taking care of them or they are switching out tenants every year. If this one fails another will come and sooner or later one will get it. The hold outs are getting older and the younger families are going to jump at a chance to get out of their homes with doing absolutely no repairs.

It IS kinda pea-soup green. I like it - supposed to evoke "grassroots" news, I think!
