Moving Toward Health: Pattonville's Food Program Sets 2012 Goal

Pattonville School Board members heard a presentation on the district's food service at Tuesday night's meeting.

Pattonville School District’s food service program hopes to work with first lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move program throughout 2012. Pattonville’s Director of Food and Nutrition Services Teree Davis presented the program’s 2012 goals to the board of education on Tuesday night.

She listed several goals the food service program will strive toward in the new year.

  • Maintain a cost-effective program
  • Work with the first lady’s Let’s Move program
  • Continue to evaluate sugars in food
  • Achieve the HealthierUS School Challenge Certification
  • Decrease the district’s carbon footprint by financing alternatives to plastics/polystyrene and using more recyclable materials
  • Conduct monthly focus groups and surveys of students regarding food services program, and solicit parent input.
  • Continue integrating more recipes that give a homemade touch to the menu, and take advantage of reduced price ingredients and commodity products available to the district.

Currently, Rockwood School District is the only district in the St. Louis metro area to be certified by the HealthierUS School Challenge, the challenge's website indicated.

Davis told the board Pattonville’s lunch prices are among the lowest in the area at $2.10 in elementary and secondary schools. She said the program met its 2010 goals, which included being financially sound and decreasing preservatives and fillers in purchased food.
