Pattonville Competes For School Board Award, District Receives LIFT Grants

The Pattonville School Board met Sept. 13 to discuss a range of topics.

At Tuesday night’s Pattonville School Board meeting, Superintendent Mike Fulton said the school board is one of two finalists competing for an award through the state Outstanding Board of Education Program.

There will be one winner for each of the five categories in the program. Pattonville is competing in the Parent and Community Relations category.

Because the district spans more than three municipalities, Board Secretary Ron Kuschel said, the district had to make Pattonville its own community.

“So what we’ve done is created a sense of Pattonville, a Pattonville community,” Kuschel said. “We work very hard and extensively with interaction with organizations in this community.”

Kuschel said the board does this by talking to local government, religious leaders, real estate professionals, and others on a regular basis.

He said the board also works very hard to keep the public informed about what is going on during bond issues. The last bond issue got a 76 percent approval from voters.

Kuschel said he believes this is largely due to the district’s 55+ Club that provides services and entertainment for senior citizens.

Award recipients receive a plaque and recognition for their efforts. There are 535 school districts in Missouri, Kuschel said that being a finalist is something to be proud of.

Board members from Pattonville will do a presentation for the program selection committee on Oct. 1. The committee will select the winners later that day.

Pattonville Elementary Schools Receive LIFT Grant

Briar Crest, Drummond and Bridgeway elementary schools received a federal grant to help the district pay for after school programs

The Learning Is Fun Together (LIFT) grant for after school programs that is given to districts based on poverty rates and student needs. These programs can cover anything from tutoring to club activities.

Fulton said the district has received the grant a couple of times before, but the school is still very happy to have the grant.

“It certainly is significant because there’s no guarantee from one grant cycle to the next that you are going to get it, cause they are somewhat competitive,” Fulton said.
