Head Football Coach Bob Bunton enters his 31st season at the helm knowing he'll need to rely in part on members of another team he coaches at the school if the Vikings are going to build on their 5-5 record in 2011.
That's right, the Parkway North baseball team, which went to the state championship game this past spring.
First baseman Andy Huss returns at Quarterback for the football Vikings in his senior season, his second as a starter. He may one of the most visible returning offensive players for North, which saw RB/LB and RB/DB Jovonte Suber graduate to NCAA programs at Missouri and St. Cloud State. Bunton said an offensive line that had growing pains last season could be a strength in 2012.
"You have to trust your program in years like this, that if there were kids who were J-V last year, it's their time to step and play and if you were a Junior last year and you played a little bit, now is your time," Bunton told Patch
And as for the other baseball talent who could loom large this season? Daniel Brodsky, a second baseman, is giving up playing soccer his senior year to be the team's placekicker.
The 2012 campaign features something a little different, thanks to new MSHSAA postseason rules coming after a 9 game regular season:
"The 10th week will be the beginning of the District Championships. Teams will be placed into districts comprised of eight teams and seeded by a point system over the nine-game regular season. The third game of the championship series would be the district championship game, eight district champions and eight district runner-ups being crowned.
The district champions would then advance to the quarterfinals of the state series."
