Chaminade Dominates In Mid-States Hockey Opener Against MICDS

Chaminade sophomore Trey Dodd had three goals and an assist, as Red Devils romp over Rams 12-2.

For the MICDS hockey team, opening the 2012-2013 season against one of the area's best teams, nearby rival Chaminade, has a certain upside, but also comes with a potentially tremendous downside.

On the positive end, the Rams get to gauge exactly where they stand as a club in their first game of the season, in a matchup against a Chaminade team many believe could contend for the Mid-States Hockey Association Challenge Cup title at the end of the year.

The problem there though, is if MICDS isn't quite ready for a matchup against Chaminade, then the Rams could be in for a long night against an elite-level club like the Red Devils.

And unfortunately for MICDS, Saturday night's season-opening meeting turned out to be the latter, as the Red Devils handed the Rams a pretty convincing loss, 12-2, at the Queeny Park Ice Rink.

"It's (going to be a) tough start to the season for us, because we didn't get to have any preseason games or practice games at all," MICDS head coach Kyle Webb said. "So this our first time that we played a game together. It started out a little rough, and it took us a while to get it together, but I thought we played a good third period. So that's something to build off of."

The third period was MICDS' best, as the Rams produced several good scoring chances and even netted a nifty first goal of the season by freshman William Polk.

But Chaminade really controlled the action from the outset, and scored early and often -- producing five goals each in the first and second periods.

Sophomore Trey Dodd had a huge debut for the Red Devils, netting three goals and an assist, to lead an offense that also got two goals apiece from senior John Hogan and junior Mark Eckhardt.

Junior Kyle Johnson had four assists as well, and classmate Austin Heggie scored his first varsity goal, as Chaminade got contributions from nearly everyone.

"Definitely a good way to start off the season," Chaminade head coach Nathan Hirsch said. "We just lost in the semifinals to Lindbergh at the Webster Top Hat Tournament, which was a pretty disappointing loss. But to bounce back like this was definitely a positive."

For MICDS, sophomore Devan Sant had the other goal on the night, and junior Matthew Myer had assists on both scores of what proved to be a disappointing debut for the Rams.

"It was just the first game," Webb said. "We've got a long way to go, and lots of time to improve on what we need to."

The Rams will be back in action next Saturday night, November 10, with a 9:15 p.m. game against Lafayette at the Affton Ice Rink.

Chaminade won't have nearly as long to wait before it gets back out on the ice, the Red Devils have a game scheduled for Monday, when they'll play Francis Howell North at the Rec-Plex South facility in St. Peters.
