Chaminade Ushers In Inaugural Athletic Hall Of Fame Class

Emotional event brings reminders of past sports accomplishment at the Creve Coeur school.

unveiled its original class of Athletic Hall of Fame at the 2011 Sports Hall of Fame Banquet Saturday night.  The list features twelve individuals and includes the 1974 swim team.

The inaugural inductees include NBA All-Star David Lee (’01), Paul Stastny (’04) who is the son of Blues Hall of Famer Peter Stastny, and 2011 Major League Soccer Player of the Month for April (’00).

The event kicked off with a Mass in the chapel followed by cocktails and dinner at the Atrium and then came the induction ceremony.

The Chaminade Sports Hall of Fame will recognize living or deceased individuals for personal achievements and contributions.  The Hall of Fame will also honor those who dedicated their service, support and personal time and effort to the Chaminade athletic program.

“The moment I walked on this campus, I didn’t look back,” Col. James Hackett (’49) said. “The lessons that I learned in this building and on those fields stayed with me everyday of my life.”

“I loved every minute of playing for Chaminade,” Michael McKee (’68) said. “This is a great group and I’m very honored and pleased to be included.”

“I can’t accept anything without sharing it with my teammates, classmates and teachers,” Ted Stipanovich (’71) said. “I’ve also got a great family and a lot of great friends.”

“I’m proud to be part of an institution that begins their activities by celebrating the Eucharist,” Michael Rogers (’83) said.  “I really appreciate the guys that put this together that continued the Chaminade tradition.”

“I enjoyed the opportunity to come back and see all the development that’s going on at Chaminade,” Joel Gonzales (’91) said.  “It’s been long of a time to be away and it’s been great seeing everything and everybody again.”

“I was a little surprised when I was selected but I’m truly honored and humbled to be among a great group of athletes and men,” Mike Sabo (’98) said.  “The values and principles the Chaminade community instilled in me really stick with me today.”
