De Smet Hails State Soccer Champions

The school held the team's banquet Monday

It has been a tough time at De Smet Jesuit in recent days, as the school mourns . Events have been postponed and rescheduled in light of what happened. Boys Varsity Soccer Coach Greg Vitello consulted with others as he thought if it would be best to do the same for the team's annual banquet Monday, where the school would celebrate the

Ultimately, the decision was made to go forward, as a way to heal, and to give the school community something to smile about.

Vitello started the program with a revised schedule to allow students who also had a hockey commitment Monday night, to make their game. One of them, in particular, had done something to earn a little slack.

"Scott scored a goal this year," Vitello said of Scott Russo. "The goal of a lifetime," he said of the to seal a district title and serve as the start of what ended up with a state title in Kansas City.

Those at the banquet also saw a video and picture slideshow highlighting the season, and honored players who earned postseason honors.
