De Smet Jesuit Grad Moeller Heads For 'Dunk City'

The former center for the Creve Coeur school will play next season for the Ft. Myers, FL team that garnered national attention during the 2013 NCAA tournament.

A college basketball road that started at the University of Missouri for De Smet Jesuit graduate Eric Moeller and winded its way around the country will continue on at the home of last year's NCAA Tournament Cinderella. Moeller, a center with a perimeter game, confirmed he has committed to play at Florida Gulf Coast University.

Moeller, a 2012 graduate from De Smet Jesuit, enrolled at Missouri with plans to redshirt and then walk on for Frank Haith's Tigers.

The two sides parted ways without getting into specifics behind the move. Moeller, who had scholarship offers and interest from mid major schools, including FGCU as a high school recruit, turned to a California circuit of camps play that gave him exposure to a new round of schools this past summer.

After taking a visit to the Ft. Myers school this past weekend, Moeller told Patch Monday that he informed new FGCU Coach Joe Dooley of his plans to play for the Eagles, who were dubbed as being from "Dunk City" during the team's meteoric rise through the NCAA tournament last spring. The upstart Eagles became the first number 15 seed to reach the Sweet 16 of the tournament, with an up-tempo style under former head coach Andy Enfield. Enfield left FGCU to take over at the University of Southern California.

Moeller said he was worried that the style of play would change when Enfield left, but that Dooley, a former Bill Self assistant at Kansas will keep it up.

He said Monday he's already heard from FGCU fans, loves the players and excited about the chance to play and the chance to win.

Moeller said he will finish this current academic year at the College of Central Florida and have three years to play three years.
