District Golf Roundup: De Smet, Westminster Take Team Titles

De Smet won the Class 4 District 3 team championship while Westminster won the Class 3 District 3 title.

Here is a recap of how area golf teams fared in this week's district tournaments:

The Spartans won the Class 4 District 3 team championship at The Missouri Bluffs in St. Charles, Mo. with a final score of 309. DeSmet’s Scott Hamel shot a 74 to claim the individual title. Nick Arman shot a 76, followed by strong play from Michael George (79), Michael Odenwald (80) and James Siegfried (81). DeSmet advances to sectionals at Old Hickory in St. Peter’s, Mo. next Wednesday. The state tournament will be held May 16-17 at Twin Oaks in Springfield, Mo.

: The Red Devils finished second with a score of 311 in the Class 4 District 3 Tournament at The Missouri Bluffs. This was 26 strokes ahead of third-place . The top individual score was from Stephen Wilson with a 75, followed by teammates Brandon Straeb (77), Alex Doneff (78), Daniel Willey (81) and Michael Kothoff (90). The top two teams in each district advance to state sectionals, so Chaminade will also play at Old Hickory next Wednesday.

Parkway Central: The Colts were a distant third in the Class 4 District 3 Tournament, 26 strokes behind second-place Chaminade. Four golfers still qualified for sectional play in Blake Schiel (79), Jason Sobelman (84), Billy Melvin (87) and Ben Gross (87).

: The Pirates shot a 355 to place fourth at the Class 4 District 3 Tournament. Jacob Masek and Shaun Treat each shot an 86 to lead Pattonville.

The Vikings finished seventh out of nine teams at the Class 4 District 3 Tournament. Jefferson Hartig shot an 86.

The Rams placed sixth out of 11 teams in the Class 4 District 2 Tournament at Persimmon Woods Golf Club in Weldon Springs, Mo. Ladue had a team score of 340, 26 shots behind district champion Parkway South and one shot behind fifth-place Lafayette. Seth Smith shot a 77 and Alex Cordeal shot an 84.

: The Wildcats won the Class 3 District 3 championship with a team score of 151 in a tourney shortened to nine holes because of rain. The competition took place at the Norman K. Probstein Golf Course in Forest Park. Westminster also had the individual district champion as Kevin VandeKamp shot a 34. It is the second straight district title for VandeKamp. Other notable performances for the Wildcats included Ryan Haxel (38), Matthew Brugner (39), Peter Sippel (40) and Schaeffer Bell (40).

Westminster, the defending Class 3 team champion, will play at Aberdeen Golf Club in Eureka, Mo. next Wednesday. The Class 3 state tourney is May 16-17 at Silo Ridge Golf Course in Bolivar, Mo.

The team finished with a nine-hole score of 157, which tied them with Lutheran South and MICDS for second place in the Class 3 District 3 championship. However, Lutheran South claimed second place based on a scorecard playoff. Priory’s Parker Goldman shot a 37, followed by Matthew Finneran (38), Andrew Fogarty (39), Mason Meiners (40) and Colin Kopsky at 40.

: The Warriors won the Class 2 District 2 title at The Landings at Spirit Golf Club in Chesterfield with a score of 326 to edge out Lutheran-St. Peter’s (349). Whitfield was led by Mitchell Rutledge, who shot five-over par, followed by Alexander Sarr Whitfield (+8) and Jake Andrews (+9). Whitfield will compete next Wednesday at Cape Girardeau for sectionals.
