Explaining My Summer Olympic Bias

Editor talks about following athletes from areas outside of St. Louis.

The Summer Olympics are off and running, and like many of us, I'm keeping a close eye on what happens with St. Louis area athletes like graduate Becky Sauerbrunn.

But the opening weekend has already provided lots of excitement for this editor from Rochester, NY.

  • Jason Turner, who I graduated with from McQuaid Jesuit in 1993, made his second Olympic squad this year in the air pistol competition, but failed to qualify for the finals in London.
  • And then there is Ryan Lochte. Lochte is the swimming sensation who has already cruised to one Gold in these Games as he seemingly takes the torch from Michael Phelps, at least as the international media tells the story. Lochte was born and raised in Canandaigua, New York, not far from Rochester. Like Wambach, he also competed at the University of Florida.

While St. Louis has been close to my heart for the better part of 20 years now, you never forget about your roots.
