Parkway Central Dominant In 'Statement' Win Vs. Rival North

Augie Brooks, Zach Lazenby and Jonathan Bonner all starred for the Colts in a big win Friday night.

With both teams looking for a bounce-back win Friday, the Parkway Central Colts mixed their trademark pounding ground game with a precise passing attack to put down their rivals from Parkway North 44-0.

Tensions between the two rival schools were high before the captains and coaches even met at midfield for the coin toss. Some form of taunting took place not long after both teams came out from the locker room at roughly the same time.

Parkway Central (5-1) took advantage of a Viking fumble on North's second play of the game's opening drive when Augie Brooks' 4 yard touchdown run gave the Colts an early 7-0 lead. North responded with a drive of nearly eight minutes that featured two conversions on fourth and short, only to stall at the Colt 27 yard line.

On the ensuing drive quarterback Zach Lazenby, one of the area's best kickers, put points on the board with a field goal to make it 10-0 early in the second quarter.

The game's key sequence may have come on the next Viking possession when North (3-3) could not answer and went three and out with a punt. When the Colts got the ball back, it was Brooks doing the damage again, with a 10 yard scamper to make it 17-0 and difficult for a run-dependent North offense to mount a comeback.

From there, Lazenby put the game away in the air, with a 45 yard strike to Johnny Naughton for a score and a 75 yard completion to Jonathan Bonner three minutes later to make it 31-0 at halftime.

Unofficially, Colts running back Augie Brooks had 17 carries for 163 yards on touchdown runs of 4, 10, 22 and 52 yards on the night.

"That's the statement I was looking for, boys," Colts Head Coach Mark Goldenberg said afterward, as his team looked to respond after a loss to Webster Groves. "We did not execute last week," he said, adding that the message to his team was to "do what we do."

"That's a very very tough night. but they took it to us. It was all Central being very, very physical," Parkway North Head Coach Bob Bunton said, noting that his team came unraveled.

The MVP of the night for Parkway North may have been the team's training staff, which tended to injuries that knocked seven starters out of the game. For those at the game, the most serious may have appeared to have taken place at the end of the first half, when freshman running back Ryan Smith was tended to on the ground for several minutes, delaying halftime festivities. Bunton said he likely suffered a concussion and would miss a week or two.
