Parkway North and Oakville Battle The Elements & Eachother Friday

The Vikings use several goal-line stands to hold on for a home win against the visiting Tigers.

This is why we have artificial turf.

That's what Parkway North Head Coach Bob Bunton said after his Vikings survived a rainy evening and the Oakville Tigers Friday night in the school's 2012 home opener.

The game was played despite heavy downpours as the St. Louis area was drenched by the remnants of Hurricane Isaac. Had the game not been played Friday, it would have been made up early Monday morning.

One week after chewing up the game clock by running the ball in a loss to SLUH, the Vikings (1-1) took a slightly different approach in Week 2, converting a fake punt for a first down in the first half against Oakville (0-2) to take a 6-0 lead at the half.

In the second half, the teams traded costly fumbles deep in Parkway North territory. A deep passing play for North was called back on a penalty and on the following play, Jonathan Little broke off a 90 yard touchdown run to take a 14-0 lead.

Oakville cut the lead to 14-7 on a Kyle Hearn touchdown but a drive inside North's 20 yard line in the game's final minute stalled on downs after several penalties kept hope alive.

After the game Oakville Head Coach Arlee Conners told his team that they were in a funk and needed to stop playing to the level of their competition.

Both teams will be back at practice on the Labor Day holiday, working on next week's opponents.
