Priory's Jeffrey Hopson Signs With Northwestern

The forward/midfielder from Chesterfield was part of the Rebels' 2011 state championship squad.

Jeffrey Hopson made official what he had first announced more than a year ago. He submitted his signed letter of intent Wedneday to play soccer at Northwestern.

Hopson was feted Wednesday in a St. Louis Priory library ceremony complete with a decorated cake fit for a Wildcat.

As a junior, Hopson scored 19 goals and had 19 assists, helping guide Priory to an undefeated state title in 2011. Hopson opted to play for the Scott Gallagher Academy program during what would have been his senior season at Priory. He praised the school for its support of that decision and went out of his way to point out how much Priory's academic rigors have prepared him for the future.

Patch will have more on that dynamic and how several Creve Coeur area players handled that decision later this week.

As for Northwestern, Hopson said the mix of strong academics and athletic competiveness, along with a campus in Chicago that was far enough away from home but not too far was enticing. "All those features just put together, builds a great future for me," he said.

Hopson joins a line of Creve Coeur area soccer players who have continued their careers in the Big Ten, including Brian Hail of De Smet, who also signed his letter of intent Wedneday.
