Robert Steeples' NFL Future: St. Louis Rams "Best Fit"

The De Smet Jesuit graduate from Florissant signed a free agent deal with his hometown team over the weekend.

Patch reported over the weekend that Robert Steeples, a cornerback from the University of Memphis who attended De Smet Jesuit High School and grew up in Florissant signed a free agent deal with the St. Louis Rams after the NFL draft ended Saturday.

On Sunday, he talked to Patch about a weekend of activity that only saw him get six hours sleep.

He followed through on the getting a workout in before coaching a youth flag football team he said played with confidence Saturday. As the last rounds of the NFL Draft wound down, Steeples said his agent heard from The Oakland Raiders, Chicago Bears, Seattle Seahawks, Houston Texans, New York Giants and the Rams.

Steeples said he and his agent had studied up on between 15-20 organizations and found the Rams to be the "best fit" after he went undrafted. NFL teams are allowed to work out draft prospects from their home region, so the Rams had Steeples in for a visit in recent weeks. He said Sunday he "just had a good feeling about the direction they're headed," adding that he felt his hometown team was the best shot for making an NFL roster.

His first mini-camp opens May 9. In the meantime he's finishing his graduate work for his Masters Degree and working out to make sure he can take advantage of his chance to prove 31 other teams wrong.

"It feels good, man, to have a home for now," Steeples said.

He also talked with KSDK's Rene Knott about his opportunity.
