Torrey Making Mark On Chaminade Football Program

The school's new head coach is putting an emphasis on offseason strength work, and talks about plans to travel to Notre Dame this summer.

Torrey's first game will come in the fall, but he's wasted no time putting his stamp on the program. Offseason strength workouts at 6:15 a.m.? Check. Filling out his coaching staff? Working on it. Torrey said he has candidates in meeting with school administrators this week, including former head coaches at other area programs, with hiring expected in the next few weeks.

Plans are also firmed up for the varsity and junior varsity squads to travel to Notre Dame in June for 7-7, Lineman and Skill Position camps.

This time next year, the program could have at least one Division I caliber signee, who has also wasted little time working on his craft. The school said rising senior Thomas Martin, who has been a punter, placekicker, wide receiver and quarterback at Chaminade, placed fourth at the Chris Sailer National Football Kicking Competition in January out of more than 280 participants. The event is billed as an exposure-builder for participants. 

Torrey has said Martin has a "Division I leg" who has heard from more than 50 schools. Martin goes into fall camp as the team's starting quarterback.
