Torrey Senses "Buy-In" For New Chaminade Football Era

The Creve Coeur school will look to take on a tough schedule in the Metro Catholic Conference in 2013.

It may sound cliche to the average sports fan, but new Chaminade College Prep Head Football Coach Antoine Torrey says he's seeing his players "buy in" to the new way of doing business at the school on Lindbergh Boulevard.

Torrey was hired last fall to succeed Doug Taylor, who roamed the Red Devil sidelines for 16 seasons. Torrey was an assistant the past two seasons and is a former head coach himself at Normandy.

He's spent the time since his hiring assembling a staff and building a 12 month a year program when it comes to strength and conditioning, off-season workouts. He's looking at improving on a 4-6 record over last year and will have to do it against a schedule he calls the third toughest in the state.

He's impressing upon his young team the importance of role players. At practice this week, he talked about at least five players playing both ways.

On offense, Chaminade will have Thomas Martin at the controls at Quarterback. Martin, with a kicking leg that is attracting college interest. Martin split his time between kicking duties and wide receiver for much of 2012 before finishing the latter half of his junior season as the starting quarterback.

His backup figures to be a team leader, on defense. Sophomore Roderick Campbell will look to pick up where he left off at cornerback as a Freshman, when he returned two of his five interceptions for touchdowns.

The Red Devils open the 2013 season at home against Rockwood Summit.
