Vianney Blasts Chaminade

Three late first-half goals propel Golden Griffins to 5-0 victory in a MCC clash

What began as a competitive conference soccer match for most of the first half quickly turned into a one-sided affair.

Vianney blitzed by scoring three times in the final seven minutes of the first half and continued a solid opening 40 minutes in the second half as the Golden Griffins ran away from the Red Devils for a surprising 5-0 victory Wednesday at Vader Field.

Adam Michel led the way for Vianney (10-2-2, 1-0) with two goals, Jason Hackett added a pair of assists and Connor Sparrow made three saves to earn the shutout in goal in what coach Dave Gauvain said was his team's most compete two halves of the season.

"Yeah, it is," Gauvain said. "We've had a couple games where we've put together decent two halves, but that's the best really good two halves that we've put together."

Ryan Murphy, Paul Scheipeter and Grant Coleman also scored for the Golden Griffins, who were able to something no other team has done to the Red Devils (7-4-1, 1-1), score more than two goals against them in a match this season.

"We really stepped up the level of our play," Gauvain said. "Weve been talking a lot lately about putting together two good halves, and to get two, you have to have a really good first one, and we did that. We anticipated a lot of the plays that they were making, anticipated a lot of the passes and then our first touch and passing was on today. ... We scored some great goals."

Murphy got things started, scoring with 7 minutes 6 seconds left in the first half by converting a feed from Hackett, tucking a low shot past Chris Viamontes after Chaminade lost possession on a play the Red Devils' bench thought may have included a foul.

"We've been harping on when to be selfish and when to be unselfish, and I think we demonstrated that on the goals," Gauvain said.

Scheipeter knocked in a head ball off a Hackett feed to the far post with 4:47 left in the first half and Michel converted from the top of the box with 27 seconds remaining in the first half, and it seemed like the result shell-shocked Chaminade.

"They scored three good goals (in the first half) and they were better than us today. Simple as that," Chaminade coach Mike Gauvain said. "When you score on you're chances, you're going to win, and they scored on their chances and they were better.

"We talked about not being predictable with some different things. But they're a good team, and the deserved the goals they got."

When Michel converted a penalty kick with 27:55 remaining to make it 4-0, Mike Gauvain was resorted to getting much of his starters out of the match because the Red Devils will face national power Sacramento Jesuit Thursday.

"We've got to play tomorrow. We can't worry about this," Mike Gauvain said. "We've got to play the No. 1 team in the country and I expect us to come out and play well...This stuff happens. We've beaten a lot of teams like this in year's past. They got us today. They deserved to beat us like they did today. We'll bounce back. We'll be fine."

Sacramento is actually ranked third nationally after an upset tie last Friday.

Despite the halftime lead, Dave Gauvain said the message was clear: continue to play as if the score was 0-0.

"It was a good eight years ago, I remember coming over here and we jumped up 3-0 on them and they turned around and beat is 6-3," Dave Gauvain recalled. "It wasn't too long ago when that happened. I told them if we got three that quick, they can get three."

But the Golden Griffins were able to turn away Chaminade on every opportunity the Red Devils would get, including Tommy Barlow and Jordan Bay, who have nine and seven goals, respectively.

"If we play them again, it's not going to be like that," Dave Gauvain said of the 5-0 result. "It's going to be a different game the next time we play them...All the conference games, all the teams are very good. It boils down to working hard but also playing more intelligent than the other team, too. Everybody out there is very intelligent and you've just got to have the mental part of the game there as well."
