Week 3 Preview: Struggling Northwest Faces Tough Test at Parkway Central

Northwest will be hard-pressed to notch its first win of this season when the Lions play at Parkway Central (2-0) at 7 p.m. on Friday.

The Colts (2-0) will likely give the visiting Northwest Lions all they can handle Friday, and maybe much more, as the teams meet at 7 p.m. in a nonconference matchup.

In its first two games, Parkway Central’s defense has surrendered less than 200 yards on the ground, while Northwest has allowed 496.

The Colts’ offense has racked up 673 yards while Northwest has gained just 272. Parkway Central has scored 73 points as Northwest is stuck on seven.

However, the comparison is hardly apples to apples. The Lions drew two of the area’s toughest teams to start the season in Mehlville and St. Louis University High. Parkway Central, on the other hand, that has yet to win in 2011, and a Seckman squad that hasn’t posted a winning season in the past four years.

So, the jury is still out on how good the Colts are, and it may be awhile before it returns with a firm verdict, regardless of what occurs against the Lions.

Parkway Central does have a tough schedule in the second half of the season, as the Colts will face Kirkwood, and Webster Groves. In the meantime, they’ll have to prove their worth by continuing to thrash teams with losing records.

Leading that attack for the Colts will be senior Brandon Sheperd, who poses a threat on both sides of the ball.

Already with eight touchdowns, including five rushing and three receiving, Sheperd also boasts 13 tackles as a defensive back. The Lions also feature quarterback Adnan Al Amami and wide receiver Nick Wideman, who stand out as defensive backs, as well.

Northwest relies on running back Kenny Stibor, who been stifled in two games with 75 yards in 37 carries.
